Representative Democracy Throughout the Centuries

In 1799, represented from various states were selected to come together in far-away Washington, DC to decide policy for the entire country. The people selected to participate in the United States government were supposed to represent everyone in the state. That sounds kind of ridiculous, since these states would usually be quite large and have a large variety of people in them with a large variety of opinions, cares, and considerations, but people thought it worked well enough, so they kept doing it. It should be noted that these representatives were selected by the people themselves.

In 1999, representatives from various countries were selected to come together in far-away New York City or Geneva or Nairobi or Vienna to decide policy for the entire world. The people selected to participate in the United Nations were supposed to represent everyone in that country. That sounds kind of ridiculous, since these countries would usually be quite large and have a large variety of people in them with a large variety of opinions, cares, and considerations, but people thought it worked well enough, so they kept doing it. It should be noted that these representatives were selected by the people selected by the citizens themselves.

In 2199, representatives from various planets, moons, and artificial satellites in the solar system were selected to come together in far-away Earth to decide policy for the solar system. The people selected to participate in the United Sol System were supposed to represent everyone in that planet, moon, or satellite. That sounds kind of ridiculous, since these places would usually be quite large and have a large variety of people in them with a large variety of opinions, cares, and considerations, but people thought it worked well enough, so they kept doing it. The people selected to participate in the United Galaxy were supposed to represent everyone in that solar system. That sounds kind of ridiculous, since these systems would usually be quite large and have a large variety of people in them with a large variety of opinions, cares, and considerations, but people thought it worked well enough, so they kept doing it. It should be noted that these representatives were selected by the people selected by the people selected by the people selected by the citizens themselves.

In 2599, representatives from various galaxies were selected to come together in far-away Milky Way to decide policy for the entire universe. The people selected to participate in the United Universe were supposed to represent everyone in that galaxy. That sounds kind of ridiculous, since these galaxies would usually be quite large and have a large variety of people in them with a large variety of opinions, cares, and considerations, but people thought it worked well enough, so they kept doing it. It should be noted that these representatives were selected by the people selected by the people selected by the people selected by the people selected by the citizens themselves.
