Smoke inhalation is a real danger. Protect yourself!

Direct Energy Weapons? Global Warming? Who knows? In california the wildfire season is in full bloom, in fact all around the world there are wildfires engulfing huge swaths of land.

The people who once lived in these areas are now homeless, in emergency shelters, or have fled to other states to shelter with friends and family. The scope of the wildfire season is beyond historic perspective. This is a new and terrifying level of heat and flame for the modern era, and it has been largely caused through human activity, that is if you believe science.

Here in the Pacific Northwest our air is rapidly becoming toxic to breathe. The micro-particles which we are breathing will become lodged in our lungs.

These tiny particles of pollution are very difficult to escape once they have been inhaled, they lead to stroke, heart attack and asthma among other lung conditions. They are a public health threat, and they are largely ignored by mainstream media and politicians. The so called civil servants stand by while the citizens who they are sworn to protect suffer irreparable harm from the air they breathe.

I noticed last year when the smoke engulfed Eugene Oregon that the local TV and radio stations were not informing the public about the threats posed by breathing polluted air. I realized then that in the name of National Security the public was being allowed to be poisoned en masse. The people were in danger and the government did nothing about it. I had thought that maybe there would be an evacuation, or some sort of mass mobilization to guarantee that the people who are sensitive to bad air, or delicate because of illness or age were protected. But alas, there was general apathy on behalf of news agencies and health departments. Kids were kept inside from athletics, but the inside air wasn’t any fresher, or less polluted, after all where does inside air come from?

Now again we face polluted air from the wildfire season, again there is massive ignorance on behalf of public health and mass media.

The people who were harmed by last years toxic air will be harmed again by this latest batch of un-breathable air, there is sure to be a larger population of stroke victims and individuals who suffer heart attacks. The general public is being left to their own devices where escaping toxic air is concerned. And the general public lacks the knowledge of what is needed to survive this most recent wildfire season with their lung and heart health in tact.

**If you live in an area where there are wildfires, if you live in an area where there is an unhealthy level of pollutants in the air, then please use a chemical resistant mask to breathe healthy air. N95 and N99 rated masks are needed to remove the dangerous particulates from the air, a standard dust mask or bandanna won’t do the trick. Most dust masks are not meant for long term use, they need to be switched regularly in order to remain protected. **

As most of the Northern hemisphere moves into the beginning of a “hothouse earth” our traditional means of surviving must evolve and adapt to the changing conditions we live in. We need to decide on our paths forward before the crucial moment of choice arrives. We need to act in our own self interest if we want our species to survive into the future.

Wildfires are terrifying and dangerous in obvious ways and not so obvious ways like smoke inhalation. I inadvertently found myself alone in the woods in the middle of a wildfire last year in alabama. And what you say is true. Since that day my breathing has suffered tremendously and I have no doubt that my lungs will never fully recover. While fires do have some positive effects on nature, when they reach proportions of the ones we are seeing now, there's really no knowing what the lasting effects will be on people. I wonder if deer and squirrels and things are affected similarly?
