Gauntlet (PC game)

Let's start with the fact that I am old enough that when the stand-up console game came to arcades I was alive when that happened --- and it was awesome.

Keep in mind that this was the first time that 4 people could co-op on the same screen playing towards a mutual goal EVER. Combine this with the fact that the levels were randomly generated and you have an extremely special situation. I made lots of friends at the local Dairy Queen playing this game... which is tough for people to imagine now... actually going somewhere to meet people over a co-op game... but there was a time.

Anyway, this is not about the original game that came out in the mid 80's, this is about the PC game which is commonly referred to as "Slayer Edition."

The original quatro of Warrior, Elf, Valkyrie, and Wizard still exists in the modern gaming version but I gotta tell you, it is very unlikely that anyone other than hardore gamers are going to try to be the wizard because it is the only complicated class of the bunch. I would imagine it was a rather difficult class back in 1985 as well to be honest because the armor factor didn't exist.

I had a lot of fun playing this because it is co-op fantastic. You can get strangers to play with you or just do it locally. Either is fine and the game difficulty is changeable. I would say if this game drops to between 5-10 USD, you should buy it, because it is a lot of fun. That being said.

The gameplay never changes. Despite what they try to throw at you the levels only become more difficult based on the quantity of enemies thrown at you, rather than them having any sort of interesting attack modes. I enjoy the simplicity of the game but eventually is just becomes a situation of how much can I avoid the enemy while shooting at them (which i suppose was the idea behind Gauntlet from the very start.)

Local co-op and also online co-op is incredible and the fact that the levels are randomly generated ensure the fact that the game will remain interesting.

If this game is cheap enough (less than $10) i would say get it. I have it and no matter what time of day it is I can find a full 4-person crew in less than a couple minutes. It is wonderful fun.

I can't rate the game very highly though because the story is stupid and the gameplay is designed only for co-op. If you aren't going to play that... don't buy this game.

What you can blame Gauntlet is monotony. Most often, the task is to ensure that as soon as possible to destroy the crystals challenge around which enemies appear. Of course, there are bosses, and levels, where the group is chasing unkillable Death, but in the intervals still have to deal with the same thing — to break the crystals before the monsters will be too much.

But if you pass the game not in one sitting, and sessions for a couple of dungeons in the evening, it will last for a long time. Dungeons with the undead will be replaced by spider caves; those, in turn, - fiery locations with a bunch of traps. On the" easy " level all the way-no more than a walk. But on a heavy Gauntlet turns into a test that only a well-worked team can overcome.

yes. I would say that if one was playing this game alone it would become dreadfully boring really fast.

Gauntlet has always been a simple pleasure. Run through a dungeon with up to three pals, killing hundreds of monsters as a team, nicking treasure from one another like arch rivals, and shooting the food a split second before your wounded wizard chum manages to grab it. Arrowhead, of Magicka fame, have taken the reigns for this installment of the veteran series.
In solo, the game has a very simple flow. Stay out of enemy range, dodging projectiles, and pick away at the crowd, concentrating attacks on any generators in the room before tackling the remaining beasties. There’s little variation in the levels, which either have the Grim Reaper chasing the party throughout or don’t. There are boss battles but they’re about destroying monsters and monster generators while another threat is in the room rather than a complete change of pace.

Gauntlet is a great game. I dont know about the older version of the 80's because i wasnt yet born. This new slayer edition is simply awesome. Includes characters like elf, valkyrie, wizard and the warrior. Yeah a true gamer is gonna use the complicated wizard. But i tell you, the ones who can use it have a great advantage. Thanks for sharing. Nice gameplay.

Hi gooddream. I have never played this one and love arcade games. I must have been busy doing other stuff when this one came out. Games moved with technology and it was hard to keep up with the pace.

Still have copies of Gauntlet 1 and 2 for my NES! Never got a chance to place the newer version... Nice write up @gooddream!

like most games that went from arcade to NES, the console games were a bit of a letdown compared to the monster in the arcade. However, i think that was kind of what they had to to back in the day since arcades were still a big money maker back then. :)

Hiii... Gooddream

Good post with perfect review.

Your post reminded me of my childhood days when i was jst mad about Pc games and use to spend hours on my pc playing games.nice post .... :)

I'm happy you expantiate more on the game, for the fact that is is good for your liking I will consider it downloaded but the problem now might be the money involved though it wasn't much. I like adventure and also game. Do you play steemmonster games? I asked this because I knew you have passion for games.

I always used to see my son playing in the little machines this game.
