Do you understand German Jokes? | "Sohn fragt den Vater ..." (German Lesson)

Most Germans like jokes. If you hear a joke in Germany, you should be able to laugh about it. Humourous people have many friends. That is why it is important to understand jokes.

(Die meisten Deutschen mögen Witze. Wenn du in Deutschland einen Witz hörst, solltest du darüber lachen können. Humorvolle Menschen haben viele Freunde. Deshalb ist es wichtig Witze zu verstehen.)

Here is an example. Read this German joke and try to understand it. Later I will give you a translation and we will look at the vocabulary.

Sohn fragt den Vater: "Papa, was ist eigentlich ein Alkoholiker?"
Vater: "Siehst Du die 4 Bäume da? Ein Alkoholiker sieht da 8 Bäume."
Sohn: "Aber da stehen nur 2 ...."

Did you understand that joke? Do not be sad if you could not translate the text. German is a difficult language. This is the English translation:

Son asks the father: "Dad, what is an alcoholic?"
Father: "Do you see the 4 trees?" An alcoholic sees eight trees. "
Son: "But there are only 2 ...."

The word "eigentlich" means "in fact" or "actually". The exact translation for the last sentence would be "But there stand only 2 ..."
