The deepest hole in the world.

in #geology6 years ago

No, this is not a smear piece on Stormy Daniels. Get your minds out of the gutter. Rather I am talking about the actual deepest hole ever drilled into the earth. The Kola Superdeep Borehole is a 9 inch wide hole drilled into the surface of the earth on the Kola Peninsula, which juts eastward out of the Scandinavian landmass.

How deep is it?

The hole is 40,230 feet deep or 7.5 miles.

How long did it take?

To reach the 7.5 miles it took 20 years

Why did they stop?

The mission came t a stop due to the fact that the temperatures were far above what was planned. Engineers figured at that depth the temperature should be just above 212 degrees but when they reached the spot they found it was almost double that ate 365 degrees. That forced a stoppage to the drilling due to the fact at that that temperature there was no way to keep the hole open as the material was melting and filling in the borehole.

I hope you found some of this interesting and inspires you to look into this or related subjects for yourself.
