Today I share with you a passage where the metaphor of construction is used to describe how believers in Christ are united and built on the solid foundation of the teachings of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ as the fundamental cornerstone. This building process is not static, but is constantly growing towards a divine goal: to be a holy temple where God dwells through the Holy Spirit. The church, then, is not only a human institution, but a spiritual community that reflects the presence of God in the world.

Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, the main cornerstone being Jesus Christ himself, in whom the whole building, well coordinated, grows to be a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are being built together into the dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Ephesians 2:20-22

"Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets"

• Foundation: In construction, the foundation is the most important part of a building, since it supports the entire structure. In the context of Ephesians, the foundation represents the teachings and testimony of the apostles and prophets.
• Apostles and prophets: The apostles were the direct followers of Jesus Christ, who received his teaching and spread it. Prophets in this context can refer to both Old Testament prophets and those in the early church who had the gift of prophecy. Together, the apostles and prophets provided the teaching and revelation that are essential to the Christian faith.

"Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone"

• Main cornerstone: In ancient architecture, the cornerstone was the most important stone in the structure of a building. It was the first stone placed during construction and determined the position of all the other stones. Here, Paul identifies Jesus Christ as the cornerstone, emphasizing his crucial role in the church. Jesus Christ is the foundation on which everything else is built, ensuring that the entire building is correctly aligned and stable.

"In whom the whole building, well coordinated, grows to be a holy temple in the Lord"

• The whole building, well coordinated: Paul compares the Christian community to a building that is being built in a harmonious and organized way. Each believer is a "living stone" that contributes to the entire structure.
• It is growing: This indicates a continuous process of spiritual growth and development. It is not a static building, but one that is constantly being built and expanded.
• To be a holy temple in the Lord: The ultimate goal of the building is to become a temple, a holy place where God dwells. In the Old Testament, the temple was the place where God resided among his people. In the New Testament, Paul says that the church, as a body of believers, is the new temple of God.

"In whom you also are being built together for the dwelling place of God in the Spirit"

• You also are built together: Paul assures the Ephesians that they, as Gentile believers, are an integral part of this building. They are not excluded; They are equally important in the construction of the spiritual temple.
• For a dwelling place for God in the Spirit: The purpose of this spiritual building is to be a dwelling place for God. Through the Holy Spirit, God dwells in each believer and in the Christian community as a whole. This underscores the unity and holiness of the church as the body of Christ.

Hoy les comparto un pasaje donde se usa la metáfora de la construcción para describir cómo los creyentes en Cristo están unidos y edificados sobre la base sólida de las enseñanzas de los apóstoles y profetas, con Jesucristo como la piedra angular fundamental. Este proceso de edificación no es estático, sino que está en constante crecimiento hacia un objetivo divino: ser un templo santo donde Dios habita a través del Espíritu Santo. La iglesia, entonces, no es solo una institución humana, sino una comunidad espiritual que refleja la presencia de Dios en el mundo.

Edificados sobre el fundamento de los apóstoles y profetas, siendo la principal piedra del ángulo Jesucristo mismo, en quien todo el edificio, bien coordinado, va creciendo para ser un templo santo en el Señor; en quien vosotros también sois juntamente edificados para morada de Dios en el Espíritu.
