Gayo Coffee Catalog : First Coffee History in Gayo

Even before the road was opened the Dutch had begun to create small estates to produce cash crops and to introduce new crops to Gayo small-holders.

Potatoes and cabbage arrived in Takengen in 1905.And in 1908 the first arabica coffee trees were planted north of the lake.

Menurut John R Bowen, seorang Antropolog dari Amerika, kopi Arabica pertama ditanam tahun 1908. Di Wilayah Utara Danau.

Wilayah Utara Danau ini diyakini adalah wilayah Paya Tumpi. Karena menurut Pak Wiknyo, peneliti kopi dan juga penduduk Paya Tumpi. Di Paya Tumpi terdapat sebuah perkebunan Belanda

Menurut kisah warga Gayo, sebelum Belanda tiba, penduduk Dataran Tinggi ini sudah mengenal kopi. Tapi belum dibudidayakan. Dibiarkan tumbuh tinggi.

Daunnya di panaskan di perapian, lalu dimasukkan air panas. Seperti teh. Teh kopi. Tapi menurut DR. Joni, ahli linguistik, Peri Mestike Gayo, kopi sudah dikenal penduduk Gayo.

Kopi disebut Sengkewe. Atau disebut Kopi Nangka.
