Gardening with Japanese Forest Grass
Hakonechloa macra or commonly known as Hakone Grass is superb for accent plantings or as a ground cover too. It looks amazing here at the edge of my rock wall, with it's cascading leaves gently waving in the breeze. The grass spreads slowly by rhizomes to form a very nice clump of accent grass. It looks great along pathways or even underneath trees. I actually put some into a container garden one year with other taller plants for a different look.
This easy to grow Forest Grass is native to Japan and enjoys a moist, well-drained, soil in a partly shady location. It will do well in full sun too, but if you have extreme temperatures it may scorch a bit. The grass has a variegated pattern of white and green, or golden yellow and green, depending on your variety.
You will enjoy the grass in the fall too, as it will turn a rusty-orange shade as the temperatures cool. When you are cleaning your yard up from the fallen leaves before the snowfalls, is the perfect time to cut the grass back. In the spring the new shoots will emerge to compliment your garden once again.
Until next time, this is Sunscape...
