Natural Pest Control - Attracting Frogs Into The Garden

in #gardening5 years ago (edited)

Frogs and toads benefit the garden greatly. They have an incessant appetite for bugs like slugs and snails which like to eat young seedlings, and low lying plant leaves. They eat a number of other common garden and yard pests as well. Frogs love to snack on mosquitos and flies, which, if you are a homesteader you know can be a big nuisance with rain barrels, chickens and other homestead animals, as well as wet soil. They will even eat wood roaches that are attracted to your woodchips and wood piles, beetles, slugs, crickets, ants and other invertebrates. One frog alone is capable of consuming 10,000 bugs in just one summer.

So, how do you attract these beneficial creatures to your garden?? It's simple. Provide a safe, clean (standing) water source, shelter, and shade. Creating a simple small frog bog is very easy and a fun project to take on! Add elements into the bog to give varying height, hiding spaces, color, and texture. Be sure to place the bog in an area that will provide a bit of shade during the hot part of the day. Keep in mind the height of the bog as well. You want it to be easily accessible.

Frogs aren't the only creatures that will benefit from a small bog like this. The butterflies and bees will get use of it too!
With shells, slate tiles, and rocks it offers varying depths, places to rest, to hide, all sorts of benefits to numerous creatures. :).

In between the rain today, Kaliah and I went outside to set our little frog bog back up 🐸 :). Thanks Earth Warriors for the nudge! Kaliah is thrilled to have it back. We took it apart to use for our two rescued turtles until we had a bigger and better water source for them. Now that we have a better set-up for the turtles, the frogs can have their bog back.
Kaliah likes to come out to rearrange the shells, check for tadpoles and frogs, and just play! :). She gets to display some of her extra special treasures. The shells in the frog bog came from all over....trips we have taken to Puerto Rico, Long Island NY, Seattle WA, and some special crystals and stones from the Earth Warriors group along with some that Kaliah went mining for herself.

Consider putting a small frog bog in your garden or yard. You might be surprised at how something so simple can bring you so much joy (and benefits). ;)

With lots of love

Hmm. I use a bowl this size with rocks in it to grow a water lily. I have a small bonsai pot that might work inside the water to act as a shelter for frogs. Thanks for the good idea! Been wanting to attract some frogs and maybe lizards too.

A bowl would work fine. Just be sure to have some hiding spots, rocks to provide different levels and height, etc. Water lilies will be pretty in there! :) Feel free to post a picture of your finished product! I'd love to see it!

I really love that you are attracting frogs for natural pest control. This post would also be a great entry in my weekly contest about working with nature :) If you are interested the next round will start on Monday. I will be announcing the winner for this week later today.

Thanks again for a great post and encouraging people to work with nature!

@wildhomesteading Thank you! And I'd love to be part of your contest. How do I do that?
