Wildcrafted Medicine: The Incredible Healing Properties of Carolina Geranium

in #gardening7 years ago

The humble Carolina geranium (Geranium carolinianum; AKA ) grows profusely throughout North America. It is commonly misrepresented as a "weed", but it is actually a powerful herb packed with incredible healing properties!

Carolina geranium has brownish-pink stems, 5 lobed petals, and tiny flowers. Because this herb is so prolific, practically everyone can access potent pro-wellness compounds!

Carolina geranium is high in tannins; they are especially concentrated in the rhizomal roots. Tannins give the plant a bitter flavor. They also make it a strong astringent, which is useful for treating gastrointestinal conditions, moist wounds, and weak tissues that need drier conditions (such as a canker sore).

The herb is a source of vitamin K.

This lovely flowering herb is fully edible! The leaves and stems can be taken raw, cooked, or in tea. The roots are more palatable when boiled for 10 minutes; the cooking water can be taken as tea too! Carolina geranium's strong astringent properties can be made weaker by combining it with milk (cinnamon can be added for flavor).

Carolina Geranium Healing Properties:

  • astringent = causes the contraction of tissues
  • salve = promotes healing of the skin
  • high tannin content makes it useful to treat diarrhea
  • styptic = capable of stopping bleeding when applied to a wound
  • can relieve bladder inflammation
  • may alleviate eye conditions like conjunctivitis and vision problems
  • used to regulate menstruation and uterine problems
  • effective for nervous tension & fluctuating hormones
  • canker sores
  • increases milk flow in nursing mothers

Researchers found that polyphenolic extract from Carolina geranium displays anti-Hepatitis B activity!

Very helpful article. Thank you. I am not familiar with this particular species of Geranium. I visited the Garden of Eden website. It looks very interesting.

Herbs are just one of natures prime examples how there is a sustainable and natural madacine for just about any problem. The key is to learn what how and when. These quick little doses do a lot to help expose people to a more successful path of using herbal medicines.

Yes! Nature offers solutions to almost all of man's ailments. We're highly dedicated to sharing our wisdom, because there are so many accessible and cheap or free options for healing. These posts are intros to reconnect people to what was once common knowledge, but there's much deeper we could go into each herb or ailment as well!

So true, lots of this used to be common knowledge and the knowledge is out there it is just becoming less and less common. In some ways there is more in depth knowledge than now its just more rare to find people with it.
Either way its important. Also important to remember that big pharma is trying to cover up, destroy and discredit this kind of info or make it appear primitive. Yet thats just to make money and create dependents.

It is a medicinal plant with lots of health related benefits. Glad you sharing health beneficial plants information.

We know a lot about plants, and it is a joy to be able to share it here! We hope to remind everyone that nature is hugely powerful and offers solutions!

Awesome, that's a really great pledge, @egregorian! Thanks so much for your support--let everybody know what's up!!

The support is appreciated!

Herbs for the win! People that are dubious of "plant medicine" run to pills.

But what is nearly EVERY pill synthesised from or "derived from"? Thats right... Plants.

So instead of going to the source, the drooling masses have allowed the normalization over decades of wasteful industry with regards to medicine.

Have a question? Go to your doctor whose massive student loan debt from medical school is often paid for by pharmaceutical companies, with perks and bonuses for new doctors to "carry" their brand or line of poison in their particular doctor's office. Surely they can "fix you".. LOL

What are these sheeple really paying for? IN addition to all the gas, time wasted, loss of productivity being a victim? Well lets see...

How about Thousands of pounds of various plant product wastes, electricity, administration, labratory costs, lab animal abuses and disposal of tortured dead bodies, R&D often in the billions, and Millions in Advertising, and Free trips for doctors, etc. ALL TO GET HEALING PROPERTIES MASKED OR COMPLETELY DIMINISHED BY TOXIC ADDITIVES, SYNTHETIC INGREDIENTS, AND INTENTIONAL POISON INDUSTRIAL WASTES. (adderal is basically meth made with radioactive fluoride waste).

Totally ridiculous!
Thanks for spreading these different and awesome plant healing posts! Is refreshing.

People have been grossly mislead by the "healthcare" industry, but plants are a sustainable, accessible, and often safe option for returning to our roots. It used to be common knowledge how to remedy common ailments and diseases with nature, but modern society is so disconnected...
The modern medical industry is indeed hijacked by Big Pharma, and their objective is corporate profits, not human thrival.
Thanks for your support, @piercetheveil!

You Bet!

Very useful information, this plant should be cultivated in every home

Glad you find benefit in this info, @mirzacho. Carolina geranium pops up like a weed, so realistically it doesn't even need cultivation. As long as someone doesn't spray it with pesticides, it can be used to greatly benefit health!

Agreed!

Yeah but it seems that you don't get it everywhere. I found nothing in my region.

I use the geranium essential oils a lot. It's been so great for my skin. Is there more than one kind of geranium?

There are varieties of geranium yes, though lots of the qualities are same/similar for different types. Though its always wise to research before using new things to extensively! This is also like for mints or basils, there are many types but generally they are similar.

Hi Claudia! There are hundreds of species of geraniums, a handful of which are commonly used to make geranium essential oil. We love it for the skin too! It's a relatively gentle oil. Carolina geranium is not one of the common types for oil.

I have heard about this before, it's interesting how we keep coming out with new discoveries...keep it coming upvoted :)

Its also interesting how we begin to have common information come up to us what may appear "random" yet is part of a more synchronistic intertwining with the journey of life it self.

i think I know what you mean....

Love it. It's amazing how often a plant we think is a weed is actually a super useful part of the system. Hmmm, wonder where else that thoughtline applies? :) Have you read Weeds, Guardians of the Soil? One of my faves on this topic.

Yes indeed!
Great comment.

Thanks for your input, @paleotreats! Haven't seen that book yet...

Sure. I think you'll dig that book. I got a lot out of the website soilandhealth.org, which used to be run by one of my favorite "growing masters". I believe they have a free copy of Weeds on that site.

wow great blog thank you. fallowing
