Cacti Grafts of the Trichocereus Genus!

Evening steemers,
It's been a very busy week at work so I haven't had time to post, but I saved these shots from a recent road trip.

This graft is pretty interesting, the root stock is the common T. Pachonoi but the grafts belong to what's known as TBM...... T. bridgesii 'Montrose'

The idea behind these grafts is to speed up growth by using a more vigorous root stock with a rarer or more desirable scion therefore increasing the size of the preferred plant.

An unknown bridgesii with desirable characteristics throws out a nice clean pup.

The marks you can see on the cacti are burns from where the owner has used a blow torch to sterilise a severe pest outbreak.
I call it paranoid, the owner calls it cautious....

This graft is known as 'Sharx Blue' but has been crossed with another bridgesii variety.

Another beautiful bridgesii x

I'll be back at this property to see how these cacti progress so stay tuned!
Happy gardening and thanks for stopping by!!
Sam.

Blowtorch? oO, that's a bit rough

Yep!
Worked a treat though!
I used vodka to treat mine and it worked as well.

Interesting i've never seen a cactus graft and i grew up in arizona. Never knew it was possible.

Posted using Partiko Android

Sure is possible :-)
There must be some interesting cacti in Arizona!

Yeah lots of varieties including the jumping cactus where if you even brush up against it slightly a piece will break off and embed its spines in you. Also i used to grow nopales cactus for eating, really good.

Awesome!
Well not the spine part haha.
Did they taste good?

Posted using Partiko Android

Yeah really good kind of like okra with a bit of tartness.

Nice plants! I've never seen a bridgesii with as little pigment as that one.

I did a few T. bridgesii monstrose grafts about ten years ago but they never really grew much. These days I prefer to break pieces off and pot them up. Loph grafts on the same rootstock always seems to do much better.

I'm writing a story about a cactus adventure ATM it must be cactus synchronicity ;)

Yep that's how I would do it too.
Will be interesting to see how fast they grow!
The ones in the ground are growing much faster than the grafts.

Thanking you!
