A tomato day, summer 2018

(another photo from the last season that have not been shared)

In the summer, we usually have special tomato days. Those are targeted pickings of as many tomatoes from all the different varieties we grow.

Those are the times when we select fruit to set aside for seed and also process all we cannot reasonably eat... and of course we make and share a huge colorful tomato salad with friends and family!

Just looking at those photos makes me all warm and sunny inside 😄 and I know nothing will stop the nature from gifting us this great abundance!

I'm not sure how many varieties we grow last year, but looking at the yellow bowl on the left I can see at least 11, maybe more below. In the whole photo there are 25 varieties at least. That's all in just a couple of small raised beds! We sure love our tomatoes!

We usually interplant them with carrots as an "understory" and often onions and garlic, along with many herbs and flowers - savory, basil, nasturtium, marigold, borage and more. Our beds also have the natural presence of dock and chicory and dandelion and other deep rooted plants that we chop and drop as mulch during the season. Of course we dig the beds while planted. All tomato stakes we use are grown on site - coppiced wild cherry, black locust and elm. (@bobydimitrov helped a bit with some English terms in that last paragraph 😄 😘 😄)

What do you think?

Sort:

I only had one sort of tomato last season - kind of a longish cherry tomato for immediate eating.

Carrots are great for planting under and between bigger and still growing plants. Great for that are radishes, too - especially early in the growing season you can put them between the main plants. When the radishes are ready to be harvested the other plants have grown. Radishes even work for flower beds or flower pots :)

Felicitaciones, como me gustaría ser una amiga cercana y estar allí con esos, tus tomates.
