Dear Steemians, How are things going today?

For my top 10 MS-DOS game, it has finally come to the second most favorite. If you follow my daily article about my top 10 DOS game, it means you have seen some of very good games(at least, personally to me). And in this beautiful day, back again with me @zulman for another articles about my personal best DOS games that I have ever played on a PC when I was a kid. For today's post, the gamey that I would like to discuss is probably the game that i played the most compared to another games. I still continue following the development of the games until now. As much as I love playing games, this game franchise will always be there in my PC.

This game that I would like to talk about is called The Need for Speed. The First need for speed release of the franchise. If you followed my blog, you probably notice that I had write, posted, and discussed about need for speed game. However, the one that I discussed on my previous article was Need for Speed II. But, what I want to discuss here is the original, the first one, the first release, the game that make me fall in love for racing game, "The Need For Speed". The first release of the need for speed franchise. I still love need for speed until now, I mean, i played the newest one, which is "Need for Speed Payback". But, because this is the article that talked about old DOS games, I would like to review and see how it feels to play this favorite games of mine of it first release. How it feels to play it todays and bring back those sweet memories.

Alright, to begin with, let's talk about the game first. Let's remember what is this game about.

THE NEED FOR SPEED

The Need for Speed is an old MS-DOS game. This game was release in the year of 1995 for PC. The game was developed by Electronic Arts Canada and also published by them. As you have already known, the game belong to the genre of racing game. This game was and still very popular (I think), if you looked at some old game's review website, there might be almost all of those website will give a high rating for this game.

In 1995, when the game was released, The Need for Speed become one of the most successful game series. At the time, this game has the best graphics and excellent gameplay. In term of the game's goal design, it was never attempted to be a realistic racing simulation, but the game has always been focused on the fun side of the game. mainly, need for speed focus on a to become fast racing game with an arcade twist. If you asked me, i would say that The need for speed is a legend. This game has become the source of imitation for other game in similar genre. Also, this game introduced us to the games series where there is not only played by one, but for several generations of gamers as well.

The Need for speed is presented by Road & Track. This game was not only release for PC or DOS. In fact, the DOS version came later. The first release of the game was for 3DO in the year 1994. Then later in the year 1995, the game was ported to MS-DOS, PlayStation and Sega Return. The premise of the need for speed game involves racing in sport cars, including several exotic models and also some of Japanese imports car.

In term of the game development, Electronic Arts (the developer also publisher of the game) team up with another company called "Road & Track". It is an automotive magazine company. EA partnered with Road & Track to help them create a matching behaviour of the vehicle use in the game with the real cars. This behaviour includes mimicking of the sounds that made by the vehicles and gear control levers. The game also have a pricise data about the vehicle, also with spoken commentary, several magazine style of images of the cars interior and also exterior. The game even have a short video clips that highlighting the vehicles set to music.

My favorite one to drive when playing the game? It is Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 !

The Need for Speed Gameplay

The game need for speed featured some tracks that include closed circuits and three point-to-point tracks that divided into three stages. in the track there are not only race car using the road, when you play the game, you also need to be careful not to crash the car with civilian vehicles because in the game, sometime traffic vehicles appear in races. In some games, the police pursuits are also happen. It is also a key gameplay mechanic where the player will be ticketed or even arrested after the police car succeeded in catching up with the player.

There are various game mode available for The need for speed. Those are Single race, tournament, Time trial, and Head-to-Head. Each of this mode has different gameplay. in single race, the player will just pick the available cars and also the opponents cars and then also choose the track where they will drive and then drive. it is just a single race, who win on a certain number of lap, he/she will win the game. In tournament mode, there will be a racing for a season, the player need to qualify first before able to enlisted for the tournament, the one with the highest point at the end of the tournament will win the game.

For another mode which is Time trial and Head-to-head, It is also fun to play. Im time trial, the player will race again the clock. the player need to cross the end line of the track at a certain time. While for head-to-head gameplay, it is almost similar to the single race mode. However, the differences is in head-to-head mode, the player will only race with one opponent, while in single race, there are many opponents, not only one. A replay feature also allowed in the game in order to allow the player to view a saved race. Multiple camera views, playback speed and video navigation were offered for more fun and attractive gameplay.

There are several arena available to choose from when playing the game. However, it only can be chosen as the player want when the player play the game in singe race, time trial, and head-to-head mode. If the player choose tournament mode, the track will be determine by the computer as the game storyline fold down.

Open DOSBox and mount to game folder (Check out the video at the bottom of the article to see how to do it)
Navigate to The Need for Speed folder games.
Run TNFS.exe
