Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild impressions (and my relationship with consoles)

Before I begin I want to make clear that I have not finished this game, that I don't favor consoles over PCs very much and that this is half a review, half an opinion article about my relationship with consoles and what this game has done to it.

With that being very clear, I hope you like my opinions and musings about this great title ?

Me and consoles

I have never been an avid console gamer, even though my first gaming devices were consoles. That doesn't mean I have not played in consoles, I have, but since I cannot remember (or fathom) not having a computer all of me is trained for PC gaming and this has had a severe impact in the way I view consoles, console games and controllers, often times I am less quick, less sharp and less comfortable while playing with them, and this is totally my fault, I have also shut myself from them sometimes even though I always have consoles in my enviroment.

Stubborn people tend to complain about things they can't fully grasp, that would be metrying to get around Switch controllers, I would call them "weird" and "uncomfortable", and I they would seem inconvenient or impractical to me, but the truth is... my muscle memory is attached to a Keyboard, and if you play both consoles and PC, or if you play games on your PC with a controller, you won't understand me, but I stubbornly prefer to do everything with the Keyboard and mouse and I have navigated many, many games perfectly well with them, so less reason for me to use controllers.

But no amount of that could make me enjoy this game any less, so...

The Setting

BreathOfTheWild-Screen04.jpg

Not only Hyrule is more grand and majestic than ever in my opinion, it feels liberating to be able to choose what to do, when to do it and under what conditions. The setting features so many different places, weather (quite the weather) and many possiblities for your journey. As long as you accomplish the main goal of the story, the goal that you have been awakened after a hundred years to achieve, you can do anything you please. I got kicks from battling monsters that were way out of my league by then, searching for cool places and engaging in entertaining and challenging puzzles without getting too stressed or too caught up in just one thing. The game is gentle, it rewards you for exploring and traveling by giving you great experiences, sights and challenges.

It's fulfilling on its own just to go around enjoying the beautiful places and the freedom you have. The story is compelling, everything looks modern yet still in the realm of Fantasy, and everything around you behaves so naturally that at first, you don't notice it, but then you realize that you don't notice it because it registers as normal, natural and believable to you, so nothing is noisy and out of place, you just casually and organically view things around you, and they don't strike you as artificial. Only what's artifricial strikes you as artificial, and that is a great accomplishment, because imagine creating something virtual and having to remember every detail of how things work in reality, while reality is bustling with endless events happenning all at once and triggering other events.

The Vastness is overwhelming. Some creatures are so large you watch them from afar, as if they were decoration on a screen, but you know that if you walk up to them you can interact, fight, see them. They are not off-limits, structures in the distance, shadows against the sky, everything is actually there, and Link can go and see with his own blue eyes. If you get a feeling about something being a certain way, it probably is. "That seems like a harsh place, I should need something sturdier to wear right?" Right.

Gameplay

BreathOfTheWild-Screen12.jpg

Things are not simple, let's get that out of the way. Combat can be truly challenging and puzzles might get a bit hard, nothing that would make you lose your mind but challenging enough. I think that it is never the intent of the game to make you feel stressed, hurried or afflicted, you do have to take care of things, get the hang of how controllers work, be inventive, learn and practice, yes, but I sincerely don't think it is ever the goal to make it not enjoyable, and this goes hand in hand with the aesthetic factor, but I'll get to that later.

There are so many things you can do, you can paraglide, you can explore, you can search, gather, cook... It's all a sense of continuity that feels, once again, natural. You don't wake up and get out of a place to fight monsters and creatures and solve puzzles to no end until you save the world. You wander, you investigate, you think, you eat and in general do things other than fighting 100% of the time.

Combat is so rewarding and accomplishing that you might even seek challenge. It doesn't matter if it seems like an impossible beast or if it's hard to go around it, for me I felt like I wanted to keep trying and trying until I was rewarded with knowing that I was getting better with every step I took.

Graphics and style

BreathOfTheWild-Screen08.jpg

What I like the most about this game is that among all of the Legend of Zelda games we have seen different artstyles, some softer and more fun, some darker and more adult, and I think that the style here gathers a bit from all of that. It's not dark, but it's not mild either, it's not overly adult, but it's not childish, it's colorful, but not ridiculous and it was definitely created to give more of a sense of hope than of dread, at least I saw it that way. Things are by no means perfect and conflict is looming, but instead of showing a side of despair and endless darkness, there's a light and uplifting tone in most of the games. Of course, places that need to be darker, are darker but nothing looks broken beyond repair.

I am completely certain that this game was created this way exactly because of that, because of the sense of hope, Heroic actions and light. After all, the theme is light, Link is light, and he will not allow darkness descend upon Hyrule.

Landscapes are gorgeous, color is used superbly, character design is important and relevant, imaginative and creative. Everything is just beautiful.

Overall

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a game that took me out of my comfort zone and proved me that it lives in the right place, the Nintendo Switch is perfect for it, since you can approach adventure magnificently while sitting down and giving your all to it, or you can hang out and do things in a lighthearted manner while going about your day, taking your Switch with you.

It's a beautiful, rich and rewarding game that I will continue to play and enjoy. It's incredibly overwhelming in content and grandiosity.

Oh this is great, I recently made a post about The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I personally think it became my favorite video game in the series along with The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, The Legend of Zelda : Majora's Mask, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and of course The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time. I really liked the review, I hope they'll soon make another on another videogame of the saga, I'd love to see here a review of a game like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (I think I have not seen any that's why you pray). In order very good post
