Eye Candy - Subnautica Update now Live
Two days ago, the latest update for Subnautica dropped, and it really caught my eye! I just died a little inside... Anyway, this update is mostly a bug basher, that fixes over 250 issues the game had. Among them being the fact that the lifepod in which players start the game is no longer drifting over time. A quality of life addition, is the fact that, when mining with the Prawn (a bipedal robot you can board to traverse the game world and mine), the minerals get placed in your inventory directly, without the need to exit it and pick them up.
Now since this a bug bashing session and mostly a graphical update, these two areas overlap by fixing the sun-shafts no longer peer through solid surfaces, which was really obvious before, especially in large bases. Also, the stars in the night sky would peer through Planet 4546B's (the water world on which the game takes place) two moons, this issue is now fixed.
And speaking of graphics, the meat of this update, new graphical options can now be activated and adjustments in order to create the perfect look for you. Among them, players can now enjoy effects such as depth of field, chromatic aberrations, new lens artefacts, reflections, motion blur and more. That last one is not for me, but you have it if you want it. For a game this chill, and made to enjoy the sights, that already looked good (especially for an indie title), I welcome these additions.
Also with the update, new abandoned bases have been added for people to explore. New blueprints and loot can be found there, as well as story snippets. Some in PDA entries, but some now also feature voice-overs that might shed light on what happened on the planet before the player's arrival. Player made base components have received some love as well, the Scanner Room has an easier to use UI, and has received some buffs. And last, but not least, dive-reel tool has been reworked. Thus, it no longer hooks and creates a rope (that always got caught in terrain), but now leaves orbs of light to guide you back to your starting point. This will be improved upon in a later update.
Now I'm torn on whether I should play this, or the game I wrote about yesterday, as I love both of them! Though I do need to share my thoughts more thoroughly on Subnautica at some point. In any case, I'll be sure to explore the additions in game soon enough. If you wish to view the full update notes you can do so here and watch the (very) short rundown below.
I'll be sure to relax in my owl little Atlantis soon enough! Will you? Share your thoughts, as well as any feedback you might have, below. It is greatly appreciated!
