The point when the PC master race fails

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

Hey good people,

if you read this post, I'm pretty sure you know what the PC Master Race is. The hunt for the most powerful, expensive, and glorious PC that you can get with modern tech.

Most people participate in the master race for gaming purposes. To turn the graphics settings to maximum, to increase the eye-candy and last and foremost humiliate the console gamers that are stuck with their "crappy" system. In this post, I don't want to start the discussion of the good and the bad about the PC master race. Especially, as I can't be objective. I'm participating in the race... But what I want to discuss with you is a situation where the race fails gigantically.

Many of my friends and colleagues are with me into the PC master race. But I can't tell you the amount of times that I ran into people that presented me their glorious gaming systems. The most modern graphics card, a processor overclocked over 5GHz, a handselected SSD drive with the best read and write speeds and of course...RGB and then I take a look at their monitor and see smth like this...

...ok, that is perhaps a bit overdramatic. But it is basically what I see behind the curtain. I' m quite familiar with PC monitors and in my opinion it is, besides the CPU and GPU, the most important part of your PC. There are a few thinks I want to mention:

  1. Refresh Rate: I want to mention this first, as it is the topic I most frequently stumble upon. Your PC can be as powerful as you want. You can get up to 200 FPS, if your monitor can not display them at this rate it is pointless. If u run a 60hz monitor in your PC Master Race setup you are stuck at the same refresh rate as any console gamer. Your monitor can't show you more frames per second than the refresh rate of your monitor. Meaning there is no difference if you have a PC that can run a game a stable 200 fps or a stable 60 fps if your monitor can only handle 60 hz.

  2. Sync Tech: In the PC master race you are not stuck with a TV. You can use monitors that are tuned for gaming. One tech that (at the current state) are not available to console gamers is SYNC. The two technologies Free-Sync and G-Sync are methods to reduce tearing in games. The idea of these technologies is that your Monitor displays at the same refresh rate as your graphics card can compute. Besides the tearing reduction, you also get a smoother experience on lower FPS counts. This tech is nice to have and in the case of Free-Sync not expensive.

  3. Display Quality: As a PC gamer you have access to nice IPS panels. Panels with an awesome color reproduction. Yes they are expensive. But the improved image quality is worth your money.

  4. Ultrawide screen: As a PC gamer you have the freedom of resolution. In current games, you can even use a ultrawide resolution. Gaming as if you are in the cinema. Have you ever tried it? Check it out! It is awesome and in 2017 many games support it.

And here we come to my conclusion. In my opinion, you should spend about 25% of the price of your computer on a decent monitor. If I see a 2k system I expect at least a 500 monitor to go with. At some point I even expect multi-monitor setups if want to call it PC Master Race. Today's consoles are not bad. And if you really want to be ahead of a console gamer in terms of gaming experience...you have to buy a decent monitor. Otherwise, you could go with a console that nowaday can even accept a mouse and keyboard in various titles...

Have you come across some strange things in the PC Mater Race? Do you have a monitor that fits the budget of your PC? Would love to hear your comments.

Sort:

I have to agree with you (sadly) but I wouldn't call those types of people you are talking about as PC Master Race, those are PC peasants.
Same way some of the console players are lords on their system (the ones that look realistically at consoles and don't try to use BS arguments why their system is better).

Great post ! Would you mind if I included it in todays "best of gaming"?

Oh just for clearance. 3 years ago I used a console for gaming exclusively. And even today I sometimes play on the TV. I know both worlds and I try to avoid the Console vs PC discussion. In my experience it is a topic that gets emotional very fast. Feel free to include.
