When Nintendo originally released the Game Boy a whole bunch of companies tried to take their complex gaming experiences that you'd find on the console and minimize them down into a portable experience that you could actually bring with you. Many companies attempted and many companies failed and today we're going to look at one of the most notable failures on the Game Boy Color. Grand Theft Auto. Let's find the positives.

Grand Theft Auto for the Game Boy Color has several issues. There's not that many people walking around on the streets, there's not that many cars, your character doesn't walk fast enough, in fact one could possibly say that this is a very bad version of Grand Theft Auto. But I'm here to defend it because I actually think that there was a lot that went into this game that possibly made it better than most people give it credit for. All the levels from the original PC release of Grand Theft Auto are available in the actual Game Boy version of this game. It's nuts! How the heck could they fit those levels in such a tiny cartridge? Well they did and they're pretty much replicated one to one in accuracy. If anything you'd find that to be an impossible task but the people making this game actually managed to fit all of that information on here. So the first positive for this game is that all the levels from Grand Theft Auto on the PC are available on here.

A really big issue that you can find with a lot of NES games and Game Boy games is that when a character moves off of the screen like an enemy or something they tend to disappear when you actually catch up with them if it's a scrolling game. This is a very big problem that happens all over the place. You can just watch every video game reviewer out there talk about NES games and they will bring this problem up. But Grand Theft Auto on the Game Boy Color didn't do that. The people that made this game found a solution to prevent that from happening. You'll notice that when you play this game and drive by vehicles and pass them and they fall off the screen. If you stop your car they'll catch up to you. In fact it works so well that you can drive by them for quite some distance, turn around and go right on back and they’ll still be where you left them. So positive number two is you've got some great placement memory in this game.

So yes one of the problems with this game is the gameplay is really hard but I don't want to blame the controls because for a game that originally required a keyboard or a complex
controller Grand Theft Auto on the Game Boy Color makes really good use of the simplified controls that exist on the Game Boy. Okay they're not amazing but they're actually pretty solid and it does work. It just requires you to read the manual first. If you didn't read the manual good luck getting into a car. Positive number three is this has got some really simple controls.

Grand Theft Auto's original design was complex for the time period. There was a lot going into it that made it a very difficult game to run on some computers. So getting this game to run on the Game Boy required some real crazy reworks. But at the end of the day this is a playable version of Grand Theft Auto on the Game Boy, a system that really should never have had that ability. So positive number four is it's Grand Theft Auto and it's mobile.

Grand Theft Auto on the Game Boy Color may not be as good as the PC release but you know what this version of the game shows passion. It shows that there was a company out there that was crazy enough to take that experience that was on the PC and bring it to the Game Boy and for what it's worth they pretty much accomplished their goals. So kudos to you Tarantula Studios. You did a fine job.
