How To Buy Steam Games with Bitcoin

Did you know you can buy steam games and giftcard with Bitcoin? Yep, and it's about as simple as you might imagine it to be. I'm going to take you through the steps of how to buy a steam game using Bitcoin.

This article is being written as a help article for part of MMG's initiative to bring more gamers to Steemit. Current MMG inititives include the SBDGL (SBD Gaming League) and the Gaming Community Challenge: Buy a Game with BTC via Steemit.

Look For Bitcoin in Payment Methods

First thing is first, select the game(s) you would like to purchase and add it to your cart. Once you have your cart filled, proceed to checkout and choose whether the game is being purchased for yourself or being sent as a gift to someone else. Since these parts are fairly standard territory, I didn't take any pictures to help with that part of the process.

Now, you have your game and you're ready to purchase. At the top of your screen when prompted to use a payment method, hit the dropdown tab where you typically see your credit card information(I've blanked out my information in this image). Scroll down to the bottom of the list and you'll see it, Bitcoin, the last payment option on the list.

The next screen is a typical billing screen. I'm not sure if this information needs to be correct, but you generally give this information to Steam when you purchase a game, so it come as no surprise here. Enter the information and head to the next step. You'll notice I've blanked out my information, so I'll tell you, it's the regular, home address, first and last name, yada yada.

The next screen will confirm the amount of the purchase and prompt you to move on to the third-party website Bitpay

. Don't worry about anything here, all legit, and it's actually just a pop-up so you wont be leaving the current screen.

Paying with BitPay

Once you get to this point it should appear fairly simple to those that are used to making cryptocurrency transactions, for those who aren't, and also for those who just like to be more careful, here's a quick explanation of things on Bitpay.

Pick any of these 3 options

There are three options to use when paying with BitPay: Scan the QR code from your wallet to send the transfer of btc, Manually transfer the amount of btc to the address provided in the BitPay pop-up window, or open the payment in your wallet, if the device you are using has your wallet installed. I would probably go with one of the first two options as those are what I'm most comfortable with(also they're easy), but hey, do you. They all work.

What Valve Doesn't Want You To See

Last, I thought it would only be right if I shared this bit of information I found regarding fees. It appears as though, there is a miners fee AND a separate transaction fee for the third-party. It's not a lot, but still, it's good to know. If you're concerned about these fees, Valve suggests (or maybe it's BitPay doing the suggesting) that you buy your games in bulk...or at least maybe more than one at a time, since these will occur with each separate transaction made.

Well, that's it for today. I hope you have a better understanding of how to use BTC (Bitcoin) to pay for games on the Steam Marketplace. If there's anything you think I should have covered more in-depth or that you still have questions about, please be sure to let us know in the comments section.

This post is part of MMG's initiative to bring more awareness to gamers about the value of cryptocurrency and how Steemit.com is a great asset to the gaming industry.
