I'm not a gamer so my opinion is that of someone who plays video games occasionally and tends to get bored of them if they are not really good, that's why for me what sets the tone of a good game is the story, and after all currently most developers use highly detailed graphics engines and almost perfectly executed that contribute a lot to the enjoyment of the game but sometimes can saturate the game experience.

In fact the story is so important that if we analyze well many of today's games are largely reboots of classic games that marked an era where the graphics were not the best.

Basically having a game saturated with great graphics, well designed characters but with a decadent story is like watching a typical movie full of effects and with a boring and predictable plot where anyone can guess the end.
