Digidiced Release Digital Version of The Castles of Burgundy

in #gaming5 years ago

The Castles of Burgundy by Stefan Feld is originally a board game set in the Burgundy region of France. Players imagine themselves as aristocrats in this region in the time between the end of the 100 Years War and the beginning of the Renaissance. In the original game, players roll a dice to determine how they will expand the reach and wealth of their princedoms. Digidiced have recently converted The Castles of Burgundy into a digital experience with The Castles of Burgundy now available as an online game for Mac, Windows and Lunix Platforms. Digidiced Co-Founder, Patrick Soeder, spoke with Gamers Classified about the process of converting a physical game to a digital one and why The Castles of Burgundy was chosen for this project.

The Digidiced digital game is a faithful adaptation of the original board game.

GC: What inspired Digidiced to make digital versions of board games?

PS: The core team knew each other already before the founding of DIGIDICED. We were working on game projects related to board games and tabletops. When we got the opportunity to work on a licence of Uwe Rosenberg (Le Havre: the Inland Port), we decided to form a group in which we could work together on a regular basis. I think everybody in our team has a special connection to work with games and especially board games – our company DIGIDICED is the perfect platform to channel this drive and passion.

GC: Were there any challenges in adapting Castles of Burgundy to a digital format?

PS: Any production of ours is challenging! The competition in the app market is high and our niche user community has high expectations for board game adaptations. The AI opponent quality is especially important for the user experience. Being true to the original board game while finding a way to keep up with certain standards set for apps through our fellow game studios,is a big challenge as well. Concerning The Castles of Burgundy, you may say that the tutorial and the taming of the many assets of the game for a mobile device was also quite challenging.

GC: How do you choose which board games to adapt for digital platforms?

PS: As we are a smaller studio, this is a very important process for us. Each project we choose should have a solid chance for pay off in the end. Hence we are required to go for board games that have a certain fanbase size and proven their potential in the market already. Of course we also test play candidates so most games we adapted for the digital market also represent our personal taste.

Castles of Burgundy is available now via Steam, The App Store and Google Play, and operates on Windows, MacOS and Linux.
