Gaming Culture: Is the Internet Doomed?

in #gaming6 years ago

Is the Internet Doomed? - Yesterday something happened that will make my future on the web a bit uncertain, and will without a doubt cause a lot of trouble for a lot of people going forward. This isn’t gaming related, but I feel it’s something that needs to be addressed.

It was bad enough when I had to start clicking all those cookie notifications. I swear I'm going to create a website that stores cookies and intentionally not provide a notice. Come get me EU. The EU has lost its mind. More countries need to leave it so that it becomes completely irrelevant.

So, you intentionally want to violate someones right to not be tracked on-line and have their data collected, cool, cool.

You have no such "right" and in fact you are frequently tracked in a variety of ways online (web server logs for instance). If you don't want cookies, disable them in your browser.

Cookies are a feature on most modern browsers to make things easier (e.g. by automatically logging you on or keeping you from having to log on every single time you click to another page within a particular site). Like most such conveniences there is some potential privacy trade-off and they can be abused (which is another matter entirely - and you aren't being notified when that happens anyway). However, it is purely voluntary on your part. Disable the feature in your browser if you don't want them.

My point was about the annoying pop-ups you get everywhere now due to a ridiculous EU law that forces anyone who operates a web site to notify everyone who visits that the site uses cookies (which is pretty much any site you have to log on to and most others besides). The notification does not stop them from being used. Only turning the feature off in your browser or not visiting that website (or most websites for that matter) does that. It's a pointless law that only causes annoyance.

Back when I was making original music I applied for copyright spent a lot of time and money and then uploaded my music video on YT and got a copyright claim against myself and couldn't monetize. Copyright is being weaponized.

wow didn't even know that that happens!

uploaded my music video on YT and got a copyright claim against myself and couldn't monetize.

Hope there's a workaround for this...

It's sad how these in power, use their immensive power to control those weaker than them and pretend its for their own good. Not an excuse to leave the balance twisted their side.

This is what happens when you allow unelected bureaucrats to dictate policy, they are all paid by big corporations.

Ugh... they were all elected... it was the parliament.
