My new Vel'Koz build - 3 Doran Rings
VK is known to be fragile monster without any mobility or means of escape. He is best played on predicting ally and enemy behaviour.
I'm a Diamond 4 player who picks nothing but Vel'Koz in top lane. I don't play anything else anywhere else and I usually lose when I fall in an autofilling role - anything but top lane. I've grown used to tower hugging because of ganks. Taking a second look at the recent Doran Ring changes, I've noticed they're amazing.
If you stack them early, you become a monster after your first back, bullying your opponent whenever the jungler has appeared on a different lane, and recovering if you might get ganked.
Recovering your mana through Q's synergizes really well with the new doran because if you don't, it's still okay, since you have great passive mana regeneration, so you never run out of mana to clear the wave, harass or fend for yourself.
The extra HP fits like a glove, because when you get ganked, they'll alway reach you. But that's okay, because you'll last long enough until you're under your tower. They'll give up chasing you or die diving if you can land your crowd control spells.
Following up with Luden's and Twin Shadows is a must because setting up is easy and the damage is overwhelming. It's GG before they even know what happened!
The rest of the build should be adapted to whatever the game brings you. Are they too tanky (Cho?) to die? Liandry makes for a fine combo with Twin Shadows. Their fighter (Jax?) is surviving and wrecking your team? Buy Rabadon's Death Cap to finish him off first. Are AD assassins (Zed?) all over you? Zhonya. Maybe AP assassins (LeBlanc) on your tail? Banshee's Veil.
Whatever they do, obliterate, desintegrate, then tentacle rape no wait what just go win.
