Wacky Facts by Agent K #33: Did You Know Legendary Video Game Pac-Man Was Almost Named "Fuck-Man" At First?

in #game6 years ago (edited)

I once wrote an article for Tcmag, explaining how one of the most epic video games in history, Pac-Man, got its name. Unfortunately, this is an article that exists no more online. That's why I am bringing back to life a similar version of it for STEEMIT

The King of Arcade Games is ALIVE!!!

The Menu of the Day

Pac-Man is without exaggeration, the most popular arcade game of all time, achieving record-breaking sales even on its first day on the market, with people of all ages waiting in lines to either buy or just play the game.

On May 12, 1980 in Japan, the game first appeared and proceeded to slowly make its way to the markets of Europe, America, and the rest of the world. Very soon, Pac-Man conquered the world by avidly and breathlessly eating dots and ghosts inside an analog labyrinth.

Toru Iwatani, a former Japanese video game designer and creator of the arcade game Pac-Man, realized that the creation of a successful game, especially one based solely on food, was a difficult venture, and thus strove to become more creative than any of his peers.

In the late 70s, Iwatani’s main Pac-Man inspirations, believe it or not, was the round shape of pizza missing a piece, in addition to the simplifying and rounding out of the Japanese character for mouth, kuchi. The Japanese word, “paku-paku,” used to describe the noise one makes while opening and closing the mouth consecutively, inspired the game’s original name, Pakkuman.

Right before its release on the Japanese market, however, the name was changed to “Puck-Man.”  In October 1980, once the game was released by Midway Games Company in North America, given the closeness to a certain explicit four-letter English word, a lot of arcade operators at the time were worried that vandals would alter the letter P with F

Therefore Puck-Man became even more popular because of its last-minute name change and thankfully its consoles were never transformed to “Fuck- Man.”  Hence the name "Pac-Man" came to be and the rest is history and part of pop culture nowadays.
