As a teacher, we are often faced with several cases that occur at school. One of the problems that almost occurs in every school is bullying, including in some favorite schools. I think so, what distinguishes it might be just that some cases are not widespread in the news media. Bullying has become a serious problem that must be handled by all schools.

In this article, I am very interested in explaining how the role of Scouting education is in preventing and reducing bullying. As a teacher who has devoted many years to scouting education, I have some experience on this issue. Cases of bullying to students in schools can occur with a variety of factors and different backgrounds. So that the bullying case also occurs in various forms.

The resolution of bullying cases must be done with different procedures, we have many approaches to resolve bullying cases that occur in the world of education. Sometimes it feels very annoying when we have to deal with this situation. We are dealing with students who can even be said they themselves do not know about themselves, about their attitudes, even about their true identity.

In resolving this case, some schools may act against the perpetrators with severe penalties. In principle, actions that require them to act in a disciplined and well-behaved manner are not appropriate solutions to reduce bullying in schools. A more serious effort is needed from all educational institutions to reduce bullying in schools, one of which is to provide understanding and coaching about character education.

Then, what actions can be taken to reduce the case of bullying in schools and how the role of scouting education in fostering the character of students? This paper will answer the basics of the above questions based on my personal experience and thoughts. In principle scouting education is very important to be used as a forum for character formation for students as part of a nation component that is very wide range of various changes that occur in the values and culture of community life.

Bullying certainly has a very negative impact on the development of student character both for the victim and the perpetrator. As a result of bullying on the victim arises feeling depressed because the perpetrator controlled the victim, where he felt no one helped him, this condition caused the victim to experience physical and psychological pain, shame, trauma, unable to strike back, feel alone, lack of self-confidence, feel awry and afraid of school. While failure to overcome bullying will cause it to continue, of course we all do not want it to happen continuously.

This behavior can become a habit and involve an imbalance in social or physical power. This can include verbal abuse or threats, physical violence or coercion and can be directed repeatedly against certain victims, perhaps on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality or ability. The act of oppression consists of four types, namely emotional, physical, verbal, and cyber. This culture of oppression can develop where there is interaction between people, starting from school, workplace, household, and environment. In other words, bullying that occurs at school can be an aggressive behavior that is carried out repeatedly by a person or group of students who have power (power), to other students who are considered weaker than him, which aims to hurt the person and is considered as a matter that will fun to do.

Scouting Education and Its Role in Reducing Cases of Bullying

In my opinion, scouting education is very effective as a tool for forming personalities and building student character in accordance with the norms and values in scouting education itself. Values and norms in scouting education have several principles, including:

  • Devotion to God Almighty
  • Love for nature and affection to us fellow human
  • Polite patriots and knights
  • Obedient and like to deliberate
  • Willing to help and steadfast
  • Diligent, skilled, and happy
  • Economical, careful, and understated
  • Discipline, brave and loyal
  • Responsible and trustworthy
  • Sacred in thoughts, words and deeds.

Scouting education can also be used as a solution as a channel for good student creativity so that students' emotional can be channeled with positive education through directed, sustainable and structured coaching. By applying the principles above, there will be very minimal acts of bullying between students, with the hope that every teenager actually applies and practices each of the values of scouting education in living their lives.

I also strongly agree with one of the suggestions from the former head of the National Scout Movement, Adhyaksa Dault, who gave his argument in handling bullying cases at school. According to him, scouting education is very important and strategic to be applied as a basic foundation to shape student character. Thus it is very important that this scouting education be socialized in schools and universities.

He also added that there are three steps that can be taken to prevent bullying in schools. First, the campus, schools and ministries / departments of education must take firm action and impose harsh sanctions on the perpetrators of the bullying, because a predicate student does not deserve to do that. Secondly, conducting anti-bullying socialization must be strengthened so that this incident does not recur. Third, educator participants who have become scout members must have a role to protect, love and help those with special needs wherever they are. Source

Steps for Handling Bullying Cases

Moving on from the rationale above, I have some suggestions for dealing with bullying cases. Bullying prevention measures can be implemented with a number of actions, which include:

  1. Parents and adults have the role of protecting children from violence and injury by building a learning environment that focuses on non-aggressive physical and social skills, such as scout education.
  2. Control and communication with students. Control is carried out to determine the condition of students without the intention to curb the freedom of children. Invite students to be able to communicate and express opinions about each problem they experience in their environment.
  3. Supervise and monitor student behavior outside the classroom. By conducting supervision, the perpetrators will not dare to carry out acts of bullying again. Supervision and monitoring are carried out by the teacher.
  4. Doing socialization related to what is bullying, the impact caused to students, and the help obtained by students. Through this socialization also explained related to rules and sanctions. So the case of bullying will not re-occur. This socialization is important to remember because in various cases of bullying that occurred because of ignorance about the long-term impact that will be caused by the victim. Source

School bullying is an unpleasant treatment experienced by students at school. then the handling steps are needed such as providing motivation to teachers and students. Supervise and monitor student behavior outside the classroom. Conducting socialization related to bullying, the impact caused to students, and the help obtained by students.

The right step to resolve this case is to apply scouting education. Scouting education is an educational and fun activity. For coaches and adults, scouting education is a place of service. For society and the country, Scouting education is a place to form the nation's character. Scout education which is oriented towards character education, based in the open environment, processes on the basis of students' initiative and creativity. Thus, the stages of prevention and fostering control of bullying can be readily carried out with an educational pattern that is applied through scouting education itself.

This is a very interesting article, you talked about an issue that is so prevalent yet avoided in discussions so much in the society today.

A lot of people will pretend like bullying does not exist, this makes the society generally overlook the psychological effects of bullying in children.

There are enough negative side-effects to go around for anyone who's consistently involved in bullying either as a recipient or the aggressor.

While the recipient might end up becoming depressed, shy and lose taste for life the aggressor becomes more confident in their abilities to bully people into cowering.

The traits described above are ones that anyone should do away with at any point in time which is why I find scouting education a very commendable initiative for the society and the world.

Hopefully, through adequate education and awareness bullying can be cut out from the root.
