CLASS 1 CUTTING AND SEWING, HOW TO TAKE MEASUREMENTS, BEGINNERS

in #fundition-28pa2mxrr6 years ago (edited)

Today our post we want to devote to one of the basic steps to make a garment: know how to take action. Whether it is a masculine or feminine garment, a diary or a party, it is very important to take the measurements well so that afterwards the garment feels good and molds to the body without leaving any more loose or snug fit. Also essential to know how much fabric we need.

Sewing Guide For Beginners

In prehistory, man sewed pieces from the leather of animals to be able to carry them over their bodies, this activity was done in a very primitive way but already there the art of sewing is appreciated and it is considered one of the first inventions of humanity destined to provide a comfortable lifestyle.

Sewing

The sewing is based on the fact of joining two or more fabrics through threads and other materials, used to create clothing and household items such as curtains, bedding, upholstery and table linen.

Learning to sew pieces of clothing is a bit more complex because in this process the shape of the body, the size of the figure, the type of material and how to make it fall well must be taken into account.

However, within the sewing process different tools, materials and techniques are used that will depend on the type of piece that we want to create and today we will be talking about.

It is common in many families today that there is someone who sews clothes for themselves and for the rest of the family, especially in the case of having to repair a piece that has a torn seam or that has a missing button; this is called "simple" sewing, and on the other hand we have the "ornamental" seam that consists of adding details to the clothing in order to decorate, for example, with an embroidery or an application.

In the craft of sewing, the Industrial Revolution also played a very important role, both in the textile industry and in the machinery for the production of clothing.

To do this, the sewing machines that have evolved throughout history were created, in order to speed up the work and produce pieces in a massive way; an example to give us an idea: to make a pair of jeans more than five different sewing machines are necessary.

Sewing patterns

Sewing patterns
A pattern is a template made of paper or cardboard that is used to transfer a particular design to the chosen fabric, then sew and finally obtain a piece.

These sewing patterns are used to create clothing, dresses, accessories, cushions and more.

They are classified into two main branches, which are domestic patterns and industrial patterns.

Domestic patterns: are all those patterns made or worked at home; among them we can find the sewing patterns for beginners such as multitracks or those we make from the measurements.

Industrial patterns: the industrial patterns are quite special because they are made through computer software or software called CAD (computer-aided design) or in Spanish, computer-aided design.

Sewing classes and Tutorials

We must use various sources of information to do a better job and become a specialist; as for example, sewing classes and tutorials.

These sources can be live or face-to-face classes or written or video tutorials.

Taking sewing classes is a good investment because in this way we can receive first-hand information from experts willing to listen to our doubts or explain ourselves so that we understand the lesson.

For its part, the tutorials are an excellent way to learn new techniques and go virtually at the same time we follow the step by step.

Fabrics For Sewing

Today there is an incredible diversity in the market of types of fabrics for sewing, colors and designs.

To begin, let's talk about their categories and how to choose the right fabric for our creation.

Sewing fabrics are divided according to their structure and generally we can group them into 3 categories, which are woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics.

  • The woven fabrics are of medium thickness, made by two sets of threads such as warp and weft and are very manageable as easy to work in the seam.

The sense of the directions of the threads is quite firm so to cut we must form 45 ° angles with the fabric.

Within this category we find sewing fabrics such as 100% cotton, torn cotton that is used in blouses, cotton bastide like that used for children's clothing and underwear, denim for jeans, skirts or jackets and others such as corduroy, vichy, calico and poplin.

Flax, silk, wool and microfiber fabrics stand out.

HOW TO TAKE MEASURES

To begin, we must bear in mind:

  • If when taking the measurements they do not coincide, for example, the length of one leg is greater than the other, you have to take as a reference the biggest measure to make sure that you do not stay just and feel comfortable with the garment.

  • Measurements must be taken on the body without squeezing and without putting your fingers between the measuring tape and the body.

  • It is also important to take the stockings with a similar garment to the one that is going to arrive with the garment that you want to make, that is, if you take the measurements for a winter jacket keep in mind that underneath you will wear another garment more fat than if I was a cardigan for summer.

  • The position of the person to whom the measures are taken should be keeping the body in a natural way, with the back and shoulders straight and the eyes facing forward.

Taking into account these details, we can get down to work:

  1. NECK CONTOUR: is the distance that crosses the base of the neck

  2. CONTOUR OF BUST: is the result of passing the tape measure below the arms, around the bust and the most protruding part.

  3. TORAX CONTOUR: is the measure of the contour of the diaphragm and is obtained by passing the tape under the bust.

  4. WAIST CONTOUR: the tape measure should be placed around the waist, in a natural position, without forcing to put belly or otherwise.

  5. HIP CONTOUR: in this case, the tape measure should be placed around the hip at its most protruding part to avoid that the garment is just and too tight.

  6. FRONT SIZE: is the distance between the union of the neck and shoulder passing the tape measure through the most protruding part of the bust to the waist. To take this measure, we can take advantage to also take the measure corresponding to the height of the bust.

  7. SEPARATION OF BUST: is the distance between the two nipples.

  8. BACKWARD: the distance between the end of one shoulder and the other (touching the bone)

  9. BACK SHAPE: very similar to the front waist, but this time the tape has to go back to the waist.

  10. LENGTH OF BLOUSE: corresponds to the size of the front waist to the desired length

  11. HIGH HIP: is the distance between the waist and the most pronounced part of the hip.

  12. LENGTH OF SKIRT: it is the measure that is desired from the waist to the desired length

  13. SLEEVE LENGTH: the distance from the shoulder to the wrist passing through the elbow. It is taken with the arm flexed and on the back, not inside.

  14. ARM CONTOUR: is the width of the arm and is taken at the height of the short sleeve taking into account the maximum thickness of the arm or at the height of the elbow. .

  15. FIST CONTOUR: it is obtained by giving it a natural slack, neither too tight nor too loose, the contour of the wrist is measured.

Sewing material

Within these sewing materials that we mentioned we will briefly explain the most used and their uses.

Pattern: paper figure of the piece you want to make.
Ruler: used to make precise patterns of the pattern, includes a set of large square and a rule for curves.
Tape measure: it is a tape to measure easy to handle for not being rigid and presents the numbering in millimeters and centimeters.
Pencils: can be in black and / or bicolor pencil, they should always be sharp to facilitate the work.
Pins: used to fix molds or join fabrics before sewing.
Scissors: must be sharp and are used to make the necessary cuts to assemble the piece. The scissors with which you cut the paper of the pattern must be different from the one you use to cut the fabric because when you chop paper you lose edge.
Needle: there are many sizes and thicknesses, it is used to join textile pieces.
Thimble: cylinder shaped and hollow piece to protect the finger while sewing by hand or embroidery.
Notebook: used to record organized data of the piece that is made, also serves a notebook.
Open buttonhole: it serves to open the eyelets of the garments like pants or pockets.
Sewing machine: it is the most useful tool if you want to create quality pieces.
