This 'Fruit Feast' was captured on board the 'Radiance of the Seas' on a recent cruise. It is my entry for 'Steemits Fruits and Veggies Monday' Competition organized by @lenasveganliving

Anyone who has had the privilege of going on a cruise will agree that the variety, quality and quantity of food that is on offer 24/7 is simply incredible. Whatever your taste or diet preferences, no effort is spared when it comes to catering for the needs of passengers from all over the world.

The difficulty for many, is having the discipline to maintain a healthy, balanced diet when faced with a multitude of daily temptations prepared with attention to detail and if I didn't know better, with the intention of weakening the most serious of resolves . Thankfully, I love fruit an vegetables and was grateful that there was plenty of both available.

This fruit display includes apples, oranges, bananas and grapes but it is grapes that I would like to feature here. Apparently there are over 72 million tons of these delicious red, green and purple fruits grown around the world every year. They are well known to prevent health conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and hypertension.

Resveratrol contributes largely to assisting existing health conditions and grapes also contain potassium, vitamins and minerals. They are suitable for patients with diabetes and can be included as part of their dietary program. Grapes are also a great source of antioxidants, fibre and water.

The antioxidants, called polyphenols provide anti-inflammatory benefits. Resveratrol is sourced from the skin of grapes also and it is this ingredient which is reported to slow down the growth of tumors in lymph, liver, stomach, breast, colon, skin cancer and leukaemia.

Another valuable nutrient found in grapes is the flavonoid, quercetin which may also slow down the growth of cancer. The polyphenols in grapes are understood to lower lipids which, with their anti-inflammatory actions may help cardiovascular disease.

So, don't forget to add grapes to your shopping list.
