The Drive

You can read part 1 The Emergency
And part 2 The Runner
Part 3 The Questioning

Carrie walked quickly from the meeting with the two officers trying to control the internal shaking in her body. Life was spiralling in one short evening and her mind turning with turmoil. She thought of calling her Mom, but resisted. Her parents disapproved of David and asked her to reconsider moving in with him last year. They wanted her to go to college and finish her degree. Carrie said she wasn't sure she wanted to continue and had taken a break from studies to help David start his small business repairing motorcycles, his dream. David had guts and exceptional mechanical skills.

The problem was capital. He worked too many hours and encountered clients who failed to pay the bills. Carrie took on the bill collection role and did the books.

David hired a boy named Stewart who was fresh out of mechanics school to help him out. But Stewart was impulsive and was famous for weekend drinking binges followed by calloffs on Monday due to weekend excess.

Carrie slipped into David's room. The monitors bleeped rhythmically in the dim lighting. He appeared to be sleeping with the help of pain medication.

Carrie sat and took his good hand. She was exhausted and frightened by the encounter and the rising panic regarding the future and the implications of the threat to David. Is this going to get worse? she wondered. She felt a dread she'd never known before and a helplessness with David sleeping like this...she was all alone with no answers.

She rose at 10:00 p.m to go home and kissed his cheek whispering "I'll be back soon." She had to tend to the animals at home.

Carrie stuck to the highway on the way home, glancing out the rearview window every time a car pulled onto the road. Her nerves were on edge. The radio was off, something she never did when driving. She had her senses pealed for anything unusual.

The last leg of the trip home was the dirt road leading to their rental house. She was almost home. Pulling right onto the pock filled road she deftly avoided the pot holes. Suddenly, in front of her a doe jumped into the road, white tail flashing for an instant. Carrie braked the car feeling gravel beneath the tires as the car fishtaled and came to a stop. A cry escaped her lips and her hands pounded the wheel as tears slipped from her eyes.

After sitting a few moments in the road she hit the gas and continued down the road. Almost at the drive the sound of breaking glass and metal rang out in the night. The driver's side mirror was shattered next to her door. Carrie screamed into the silence gripping the wheel. Inside her purse, her cell phone let out an insistent ringing and her right hand grasped the purse, digging for the phone.

Sorry to hear! You know I will patiently wait for this. :) Be well.

What broke the side mirror? Another deer? They are so good at that.

You've been on a reading frenzy! So happy you chose my story to give your feedback. I am far too acquainted with deer accidents, I fear lol. Three on my Lacrosse just last year! Thanks again.

Life got out of hand around here for a while, so now I am trying to catch up on some Steemit reading. That means I don't get around to writing, though. LOL

I hope good news is waiting on the line! Sometimes in the midst of pain and chaos is a silver lining in disguise.
