Orbit

“Oh my god someone on this ship has c-diff!” she thought. They’d been orbiting the planet for an hour now, waiting for clearance to land. Her book was finished, her mind was fried, she was hungry and cold and now this, suffering the stench of the now ubiquitous c-diff. Good thing she thought to bring along her cinnamon oil to ward off airborne pathogens in flight. But not much could help with that stench! Poor guy. “I wonder who it is?”

Her seatmate, who had been gone for a few minutes, came back and sat down.

“Wonder no more” she thought. “He’s sitting right next to me”. Ugh double ugh
“How bad does it smell?” he asked. “I’ve gotten used to it I’m afraid. Is it unbearable?”

“It’s pretty bad. But we are all getting used to it” she replied.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria had made Earth uninhabitable. C-diff, one of the first of them, was now a fact of life – everyone got it and everyone struggled, but it could be beat. It was the others that were dangerous.

My second freewrite! I am late for the "orbit" prompt for @MarianneWest freewrite contest, but wanted to put this out there anyway. Thank you for reading!

Antibiotic resistant bacteria had made Earth uninhabitable. C-diff, one of the first of them, was now a fact of life... well THAT is scary. Who needs vampires and cyborgs to scare us when real life is the scariest thing of all?
Love the cinnamon oil! A futuristic society with spacecraft, and yet the old homeopathic remedies from the rain forests of ancient Ceylon still prevail. Cool!
