Milk

She watched them, focused in their surrender to her. Some were grateful, appreciative, but even in that there was a want. Most were consumed with that deep yearning, that compelled them to make this journey. They poured milk over her. Milk with saffron, milk with honey, milk with mint. Milk everywhere, pouring, splashing, dripping.

She sat there, still as a rock wondering would happen if they knew. That woman with 5 daughters in tow, hoping this time it would be a son. That man who had a mother who was very ill but wasn't ready to let go. That child, in all its innocence wanting to believe that this will bring him the latest smart phone.

She was amused at how little they actually needed and how much they really wanted. But, she was only here to give them a face to what was already in them. A form to direct their intentions to. Designed by the collective to give their hopes and dreams a place to dwell.

They came in droves, everyday. Some would stay for days, some weeks. They brought milk of every kind, a favour for a favour. She wasn't sure where and how it started but it didn't matter. It was a ritual that placed their desires in motion.

The sun was setting, but they still came. The generous had created pathways, that lit the dark to guide the lost to her. But if they only knew. If they only understood. It was all within. Whether it came to light or faded into despair was the strength of their belief.

Not just when they were amongst those who mirrored their notions. But all the time, every time, so as not to waiver when the others' thoughts lingered in the air, throwing doubt on the chosen path. That no matter which way they took, it would always be from within and this, like all the rest, was just one of the many trails to the end.
