And they called it Puppy Love...

Paul Anka had written the song for his sweetheart back in the day. The song that dear Andy would sing to her whenever they got nostalgic. It was a song that spoke of their love. Met when they were not even in school yet. Neighbours, growing up together and by the time they were 13, they knew they would marry some day. And they did, six years later.

Married at nineteen, parents to twins by twenty. They had grandchildren, and then great grandchildren. They had spent a whole life time together. Through thick and thin. Through good days and bad. So many tears; of joy and laughter, of pain and regret. So many stories.

Today he was lying in her arms, weak and ready to leave her behind. They've had this conversation before and he had promised her she could go first. That he'd stick around for her.

Today, he was wrinkled and weak, waiting for the Angel of Death. She could't bear the pain of losing this man she'd known almost all her life. She smiled and sang the song he liked teasing her with especially when she got irritated with him.

Oh, I guess they'll never know
How the young heart really feels
And why I love us so

He smiled at her and patted the space beside him. She smiled back, and slowly lay down beside him.

"We've had a good life right honey?"

"Yes," he said. "It was very good. Amazing. If there is such a thing as a next life, I want you to be my wife again. And I will be careful not to hurt you as I have in this one."

"Are you proposing? Then it is a yes."

"I love you sweetheart and I am sorry for the hurt I have caused. Thank you for this wonderful life."

She squeezed his hand. Yes, she had forgiven him a long time ago. The last 20 years had been good. They had come to terms with their differences, their reactions to the emotions. They lay there, holding each other, humming the song. Each in their own past that included the other.

Until Lil Suzie, their 3 year old Great Grand Child came running into the room, to show them her latest painting. Suzie loved her Great Grand Parents enthusiasm for all her paintings. They always had wonderful things to say. But they never got to say anything about the two angels she drew, flying off into the heavens above.
