How Denmark Won UEFA Euro 1992

in #football7 years ago (edited)

The UEFA Euro 1992 held in Sweden will be certainly remembered as one of the most spectacular and unpredictable football tournaments ever in history.

As absolute outsiders, the national football team of Denmark managed to overcome all odds and eventually conquer the European title at football, eliminating the then defending champions Netherlands in the process. Denmark's road to the UEFA Euro 1992 final was as follows:

  1. Denmark 0-0 England (Group Stage)
  2. Sweden 1-0 Denmark (Group Stage)
  3. France 1-2 Denmark (Group Stage)
  4. The Netherlands 2-2 (4-5 after penalties) (Semi-final)
  5. Denmark 2-0 Germany (Final)

Below you can watch a short documentary on Youtube detailing the surprising success story of Denmark at the 1992 UEFA Euro tournament:

:)) One of the biggest upsets in Football for sure.
That and Leicester winning the Premier League.

Absolutely! Who ever thought either could be possible after all? :))

But it's so great to see that happen once in a while.

It makes smaller teams dream they can do it. If Germany and Brazil won every single tournament it would just get boring.

Agreed! It can truly get way boring if big teams such as Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, England, Spain, or the Netherlands are always going to win each and every international tournament. Luckily, Czechoslovakia, Uruguay, Denmark, or Portugal proved small teams can be at least as competitive as big ones!

Yugoslavia were banned from participating because they had a war going on! And so Denmark were given Yugoslavia’s spot and, after France and England failed to win any of their group games, Yugoslavia’s found themselves in the semi-finals.

Amazing Denmark won without their best player, Michael Laudrup.

1992 was a memorable tournament.

Peter Schmeichel was an outstanding keeper for both Denmark and Manchester United.

I was expecting England to do well in 1992 but they crashed out in the group stages, Gary Lineker's last game in an England shirt against Sweden.

I really like such stories, when a dark horse beats favorites ...

"I think we won because we went to Sweden to have a good time "

Spain and others preparing the tournament for a month at expensive hotels with experts,fisios,nutricionists... And these guys were at Ibiza at the beach and get a call to play in 10 days....
