Saturday and update to growing food.

in #foodisfree7 years ago

I tend to have a couple of beers on a Saturday, so try not to post anything.

Not this week, I have had a bottle of wine, not quite finished it yet, though still glowing a little.

I have had the most amazing response from my family - to my idea to grow food and share it. Not only them, the gent that uses our fields to farm with has also decided to help.

When I told him I needed a field back, he asked why - I told him I wanted to grow food to give away. Not only was he not unhappy, he offered to help me, he has a tractor and I do not, he is going to turn the field over and also spread seeds for me, you can see from my lack of correct terminology that I am not a farmer I just bought some land you see.

Anyway- Mr man with the tractor gave me a good idea. He has loads of chickens, also lots of eggs, and would be willing to give some away, and suggested I set up a food swap shop. You see what is going on here now? it started with a thought, now we have action. I am thinking about adding a shop at the bottom of the drive for people to swap things. DSC_0201.JPG

I was thinking to add one of these as they are only 200 gbp here. So that people could swap food, take what they need, leave what they have extra.

My good lady thinks the locals will loot it and take it all for fun, so now we are looking at a shop in the middle of town.
This is evolving, I have no idea where it leads, I am enjoying the ride and people joining in though.

I maybe right. I may be wrong, I do think we can take the world back to right, if we try, I know I must lead by example. Before I try to tell anyone else that they should "me first" Allow me to lead with joy.

Lets take the tax back off the "man" in the suit.

I love your little project. Who knows what it may become. Most importantly you are enjoying it and you are trying to help others. Bravo brother!

Thank you my friend.

Good luck on your project. That is quite the undertaking!

Thank you, it is quite a big project, luckily I have support now.

It's the Law of Attraction taking effect.

No idea, enjoying it though, one thing at a time my dad used to say, change 1 thing at a time. Maybe he was right all along.

That's a wonderful idea...hope you have fun with the project; I know you'll be blessed. Regards @angryman Have a blissful day. dog-cute-pet.jpg Source = www.pexels.com

Just curious about how you plan to give the food away that you are going to be growing - are there charities or feeding schemes in your area? As for the chickens/eggs, a barter system sounds good but in a market type of environment, as opposed to an unattended stall, in order to avoid it being abused. Anyway, it's wonderful that you and your farmer friend are thinking in this direction. There will always be poor people, but there should never be people suffering from starvation.

There is a shop in the next town, that you can donate food to, and they let people take what they need, and if they have any extras from home, leave them in exchange. We are thinking we could donate most of it to them.

Another great initiative. How about just letting people work the land? That way they would take care of the produce themselves. You could find your place in the community too. Have you heard of permaculture yet? I feel you could create something good using the permaculture principles and have tons of fun along the way.

I wrote a little bit about it here. There's a short video about the principles too.

Yes I thought about 4 years ago, putting it into practice is harder than thinking about it though. It may yet all fall into place, only time will tell. I will read the article a little later, thanks for posting it.

I haven't applied it myself on a large scale, but from what I hear other people say, the hard work is done at the beginning. What I have applied, is mulching, which has been great for keeping moisture in the soil and has slowly fed my plants! I really recommend it.

Hey also check out this short video, I loved it. Very inspiring! Maybe you could try out something like that. I bet you would be thrilled! :D

Thank you for your interest in my post :)

Put it this way, your post will get a bit of a boost later today. :-)

Thank you buddy! :)

Oh I forgot to say that it's supposed to be easier as it goes, that's why I told you about the mulching, which has saved me lots of work, time, and water ;)
I want to apply this method, it looks EASY! :D

I found out about @foodisfree through you yesterday and browsing through http://foodisfreeproject.org/ I found out about the Hugenkultur beds. They also look amazing, and not so hard to make :)

I wish your project works! I bet it WILL fall into place ;)

Ooh my goodness, I am loving how this is coming together @deliberator! I have a tear in my eye for the gentleman's enthusiasm and offer to help plough and seed the land, as well as contributing eggs and other items to the #foodisfree stand!

As far as the 'looting' goes...I always think of this thing my Gramma told us, and everyone in the family makes fun of her, but it really hit me hard. She doesn't lock her door to her apartment...one day she came home and someone had gone into her apartment and stolen the 50$ bill she keeps in a cup on a shelf above her sink. She said: "It's not a big deal. Whoever took it must have needed it more than me."

I don't see any looting happening to tell you the truth, I have seen countless stories time and time again about food stands that run on honour systems, meaning, pay what you can, and no one steals all of the food. Hell, no one even steals the money! And if they did...well...they must have really needed it.

As for giving everything for free, I don't see you stumbling upon any issues, but say someone did come, and "clean you out"....I think that would be very rare to be honest, and if they did, keep my Gramma's words in your mind, and never let it jade you or make your heart close.

Thanks lyndsaybowes, the problem with the location of the farm is my ladies concern, the nearest neighbours like to take anything not nailed down, so she wants to give the food in a more organised way, and donate it all to food shelter style organisations, that guarantee it gets to the needy and poor, and I have to agree with her that is the way to go forward with this, as she is my equal so to speak.

Oooh I gotchya!
