Last week, I had an amazing cooking experience in L'atelier des Chefs located on Wigmore Street close to Oxford Circus tube station. Being a cookery school dedicated to French culinary delights, L'atelier des Chefs hosts a range of interactive cookery lessons that are led by professional chefs. They include various delicious cuisines and useful techniques to take home with you after the day is over.

I came here for a cooperate team building event. Our welcome upon arriving was warm and inviting. Plus it always helps when you are served up a glass of tasty prosecco!

There were about 25 of us in total, segmented into two small groups and working separately in their kitchens over two floors. I headed to the ground floor kitchen with my team to cook our main course under the supervision of a skilled and very approachable chef. No Gordon Ramsey style lessons here!

The main course is pan fried sea bream with a side of wilted fennel salad and black olive salsa. The chef demonstrated the work needed as well as some great tricks of the trade. Most of the preparation had been done beforehand so we just went straight into the fun learning part. The ingredients were mouth-wateringly fresh and great quality, together with a well equipped kitchen.

The chef made sure everyone was involved in taking part. He found extra time to assist some of the beginners at the class on several occasions. The whole process was fairly straightforward but buckets of fun and luckily none of us got shouted at, lol. Some nervous cooks were put at ease and we all enjoyed gobbling up the creations of our combined efforts!

Once we finished cooking, a long rectangular dining table was set up for us to sit and eat what had conjured up over more beer and wine, as well as enjoying great conversations.

We were then treated with a dessert specially prepared by the chef. A cinnamon scented orange and almond cake. Super delicious by anyone's standards!

The end section cocktail master class had raised the party to another level, it was so much fun!!

The cocktail we learned to make was Thyme and Pomegranate Cosmo. The barman Ian, took us on the tour and was very informative and entertaining. Some famous bar-tricks and insider tips were shared with us and even taught in some cases.

Ian even helped us learn the famous “flamed orange twist” which ranks among the most spectacular techniques in a bartender’s bag of tricks, haha. The principle secret behind a flamed twist is that you are squeezing oil out of the peel and onto the surface of the cocktail. As you are squeezing it through the flame, it lightly caramelizes the oil and subtly enhances its flavour. It would be no less an exhibition at home when you are serving this amazing cocktail to guests. What a useful skill to learn, just brilliant!

At first I was not sure about how the cocktail would taste, mixing thyme which we mostly use to cook meat, but it turned out to be better than I could have ever expected! For those who would like the recipe, the ingredients for the cocktails are as follows: citron vodka, triple-sec, fresh lemon juice, lemon and thyme syrup, pomegranate juice, all finished off with a slice of orange.

At the end of the evening, everyone absolutely loved the place and we all had a blast to remember. I had such a fantastic cooking experience and a thoroughly enjoyable evening too. What an awesome place, very highly recommended!
