Eight Hours Away From Food: What to Eat Next? These Chocolate Oats Will Leave Cocoa Pops For Dead.

in #food6 years ago

As a teacher, I see the results of children eating poorly before school. They are irritable, cannot concentrate and become generally disruptive. The result is an unhappy child that isn’t getting the most out of their school day.

Breakfast is an incredibly important meal. It’s your refuel from eight hours (hopefully!) of slumber. It needs to be full of fibre and packed full of ready to use plant-power (carbs, yo.) You need to perk yourself up and get some serious antioxidants surging through your blood to get you through the morning and powering into the rest of the day. Don’t let poor choices like bacon (heart-attack promoter) and eggs (massive cholesterol packet) get in the way of a truly nutritious, health promoting lifestyle. Leave the bacon on the pig and the yolk for the chick.

Let’s get into it! Time to eat some OATS!

The low-down right now is a breakfast that promotes great health. If fact, it’s what I have been eating EVERY morning for the last three weeks. You’ll only need six ingredients, four of which you’ll only need a tablespoon or less.

Interestingly, I was sent an extra pack of amla powder. It can be expensive, so getting a mistaken 2-for-1 was a delightful bonus!

The Stuffs

½ Cup Minute Oats
1 tsp Amla Powder (powdered gooseberry)
2 tsp Cocoa Powder (unrefined)
1 Tbs Ground Flaxseed
1 Cup Plant Milk (I love Soy, so that’s my recommendation)
1 Tbs Molasses

The Mixings and Cookings

  1. In a bowl, add all the dry ingredients and mix up gently with your spoon.

  2. Pour in the plant milk and mix through so there are no lumps.

  3. Cook in the microwave on high for one minute, check and stir then continue for ten second intervals to determine how thick you want your oats. I find that as I eat my oats, they continue to thicken so I try to keep them reasonably thin (I’m not a fan of gluggy oats).

  4. Lastly, plop in your molasses to sweeten the deal. You’re all set for the morning!

As an extra, I've been eating at least half a cup of fresh berries - blueberries or strawberries. I don't mix them in. I keep them for my little breakfast dessert!

EXTENDED NOTES

Amla (Indian gooseberries) contain some of the highest quantities of antioxidants gram for gram of any food available and has been found to promote positive health effects in humans including cholesterol lowering abilities and may also work as well as leading diabetes drugs (Greger, 2017).

Additionally, flaxseeds have an extraordinarily high lignan (a large group of polyphenols) content. Ligans have been associated with optimistic outcomes for breast cancer patients. Studies have shown that women who consumed flaxseed containing muffins daily, had reduced breast cancer aggressiveness and tumour cell proliferation (Greger, 2013).

More can be said for all of the other ingredients here – all are health promoting. Even the molasses – a raw cane sugar derivative which also has high levels of antioxidants, that aside from raw date sugar, is probably the best kind of sugar to consume (Greger, 2009).

All the best,
Nick.

I'll be trying this out soon. Never heard of Amla Powder (powdered gooseberry), but very excited to try that one out.

Nice one! I wouldn't recommend it based on flavour. It is in there purely for the health benefits! And.. it isn't cheap. At least not in Australia. Good news is you only need a teaspoon and it does last a little while.

Cheers!
Nick
