Today I would like to introduce you a traditional sugarcane squeezing machine which mostly used when I was ten years old. I think it is so lovely to discuss since the machine is quite unique at some points, also the machine which originated from woods is hardly to find at the moment since people have already left the machine and start using the modern one for it facilitates them in pressing sugarcane to consume.

Well, the machine is called Nyeh Teubee in Acehnese language. Nyeh means squeeze or press, while Teubee means sugarcane. Nyeh Teubee is a simple traditional machine in Aceh which used to press sugarcane in limited number. In this way, the sugarcane which already pressed by Nyeh Teubee machine become juice called Ie Teube or it is named Sugarcane juice in English.

Nyeh Teube is quite easy to operate by anybody. Even though I never activate this kind of traditional sugarcane machine, but I believe the old machine could be operated by at least one or two people instead.

In addition, the steps needed are to prepare some fresh sugarcane and then the sugarcane is cleaned and cut according size. After that, the part of sugarcane is dried in the sun for about two hours. The next step is to take one of sugarcane part which has been dried and place it at flat panel plane of the machine. Then, the lever stick is appointed to slowly press the piece of sugarcane. In this manner, the lever stick should be pressed repeatedly to make sure that the whole of sugarcane is pressed. Moreover, during the process of sugarcane pressing, the fresh water from sugarcane will pour through the cone field of the traditional tool. Besides, the cone field will forward the water to the bucket prepared.

If you visit Aceh and lucky, you will see that some of Acehnese who sell sugarcane juice still operate this kind of lovely traditional sugarcane pressing machine along the road. Particularly in Ramadhan month where Muslim are fasting during the month. Sugarcane pressing also mean pressing their sweat to receive an extra economic for their family needs.
