Citrullus lanatus - Watermelon Season has started in Balkan Area as well

The other day, while i was travelling, i've stopped on the side of the road in a more rural area somewhere in Romania ... They've had watermelons for sale!!! You could pick them up right from the field where they were grown & harvested.

Citrullus lanatus is a plant species in the family Cucurbitaceae, a vine-like flowering plant originally from Africa.

There is evidence from seeds in some of the Pharaos tombs of watermelon cultivation in Ancient Egypt. Watermelon is grown in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide for its large edible fruit, which is a special kind of berry with a hard rind and no internal division, botanically called a pepo.

In Romania you still have the chance to find organic watermelon ... still ... we'll see for how long time ... the ones from where i've found them, even the owner said that he didn't pumped them with azot and all kind of other chemicals, 'cause you could see, as he was presenting me his field with the crops on it, that he had watermelon even with the weight of 3 kgs, which is not normal ... a watermelon pumped with chemicals, needs to be at least 20 kgs :-))

I wish to see more organic crops and more organic sustainability in our food nowadays and more organic harvesting methods as well ... who knows when and for how long it will last this ... Untill then, enjoy the watermelon ... very healthy.
