As part of my writing on the future I would like to highlight one of my favorite open source projects - the FarmBot!

Whaaat is this?

In the simplest terms this is an open source CAD robotic arm with custom built in planting, weeding, fertilizing, watering, and (sometime in the near future) harvesting tools. Traditionally farming/gardening was done by hand like this…

But now with a FarmBot gardening can be more like this.

Who cares though?

So what? Why should you care about a machine like this?

In my humble opinion you should care about this machine because for the first time in history we have access to a multipurpose farming machine that even common people can afford. Don’t get me wrong. Machines like this one:

Are pretty awesome too. But it doesn’t give you anything you can eat. And if you’re going to spend the money on it then shouldn’t you get something delicious out of it at the end?

What will it cost???

The FarmBot will set you back somewhere between four and seven thousand dollars depending on how much shipping costs are at the time of purchase. Or you can order directly from the hard working FarmBot team for a reasonable sum of only $2,595. (plus shipping of course)

Final Word

How will this change the future, you might ask? Well for starters it will make gardening and subsequently at home food production a possibility for many people again. It’s complex to turn this:

But the FarmBot will take the digital revolution we have grown up with and bring it out of your phone and into your backyard to grow real and delicious plants for you.

I for one welcome our new robot overlords. They will bring cheap and convenient salads!
