Performing cardio on an empty stomach....

The strategy to perform cardio on an empty stomach is misguided, particularly for physique athletes.

At the effects on body composition wont be any better than if you trained in a fed state; at worst, you will lose muscle and reduce total fat loss.

So if you should eat...what should you eat prior to cardio?

The answer depends on several factors including duration and intensity of training the timing of previous meals before the cardio session and individual genetics.

A good rule of thumb is to consume approximately;

  •  1/4 grams of carbs
  •  1/8 grams of protein per pound of your ideal body weight (which may differ from your actual weight)

Here I have an example if your ideal body weight is 200 pounds then your pre workout meal should consist of approximately 50 gram of carbs and 25 grams of protein

A shake made of natural fruits and whey protein is a good option particularly if cardio is done early in the morning before breakfast.

Ideally 45/60 minutes before cardio I recommend that you have breakfast and 90/120 minutes after your session if you are looking for fat loss.
