Keep Meals SIMPLE!

in #fitness6 years ago

When it comes to your nutrition, simple is GREAT. Especially if you're still getting your feet on the ground in terms of establishing a healthy lifestyle!

Whether you're prepping meals for the whole week or just trying to figure out what the hell to make for dinner after a long day at work, attempting to find recipes, gather all of the necessary ingredients, and prepare complex dishes is not always feasible, and certainly not necessary!

I find that this is a road block for a lot of people hoping to make improvements in their overall diet - the process of "cooking" in the traditional sense becomes super overwhelming when trying to prepare food that's healthy and fancy... But it doesn't have to be complicated to do the job.

Let me be clear here though: when I say simple I do NOT mean plain!

I think plain food sucks, but that's just my opinion. Yes, I feel best when I'm eating fresh, whole, healthy foods, but I personally can't stomach plain white chicken with plain broccoli on the side... But why should I ever have to eat that? The answer is I don't have to, and neither do you!

I think a lot of people assume that's what healthy food is - no care in preparation, no flavor, no love. Plain, sad, and uninteresting has become synonymous with healthy when it comes to food, and I think that belief deters people from cleaning up their diet in the first place - which is totally understandable!

The thing is, it's possible to make simple, healthy food that also tastes good. It does require a little bit of thought, and perhaps some trial and error, but finding ways to give your food lots of flavor without making it complicated is something that absolutely CAN be done.

Making simple meals doesn't mean you're lazy, or that your food won't be delicious... A recipe doesn't have to have 10,000 steps and require a fridge full of ingredients to be tasty and satisfying!

Finding easy, go-to flavor combinations that you like to keep in your arsenal is a huge part of sticking to a healthy way of eating - if your (healthy) food tastes good, you won't mind eating it. No rocket science there, I'm sure you'll agree.

A healthy diet shouldn't be torturous, so take a little time to figure out how to make it enjoyable for you and it will be so much easier, and way more fun, to stick to your nutrition plan!

Here are a couple of examples of simply seasoned foods that I rely on regularly:

  • Pork tenderloin with garlic powder, cracked black pepper, and seasoning salt blend
  • Boneless, skinless chicken breast with lemon pepper, sea salt, and oregano
  • Lean ground beef with onion salt and garlic powder
  • Lean ground turkey with hot sauce and onion powder
  • Roasted sweet potatoes with cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
  • Roasted carrots with sea salt
  • Roasted brussels sprouts with sea salt, garlic powder and dried onion
  • Sauteed green beans with garlic, onion
  • Sauteed broccoli rabe with red pepper flakes, lemon juice, and lemon zest
  • Riced cauliflower with garlic and black pepper

These are just easy ways I like to prepare proteins and veggies that don't require much besides what's usually in my pantry, other than the occasional lemon, onion, or clove of fresh garlic if you feel like springing for it... I personally find that you can't really go wrong with a little salt, pepper, garlic, and onion flavor - they usually make pretty much anything taste good!

Sometimes I'll add extra seasonings over those base flavors (I like sage a lot, basil, oregano, hot pepper flakes, dill, hot sauce, soy sauce, a little mustard, or any fresh herbs are always a bonus if I have them on hand!) for an extra punch and to change it up!

So I hope you'll consider that you don't have to be Gordon Ramsay in order to make healthy food enjoyable - just add simple flavorings that you like, keep changing it up, and make the simple ingredients sing :)

Nobody wants plain chicken with plain broccoli. Here's to never eating that again, and making even the healthiest foods with a little love!

How do you keep your healthy diet simple? What dishes do you like to make?
