Friday Fishing: Salmon Fishing in Oregon

I do not do a lot of destination fishing trips, but have had a few opportunities to take some epic trips. One of those trips was a fishing expedition for salmon in Oregon where the mouth of the Pacific Ocean and the Columbia River meet. The place we stayed was Astoria, Oregon and we hired a guide to take us out.

We scheduled the trip well in advance, when the salmon were expected to be coming through the area. Since this was peak season and we were fishing with a world class guide, the trip was a bit pricey. I went with some of my work friends, so the stage was set for an epic trip.

The fishing reports before we left showed some fish were coming through, but not as many as was expected at that time of year. When we arrived, the fishing had slowed even more, so there was barely anything being caught.

Well, we didn’t fly all this way to give up, so we headed out on the boat and gave it a shot. We ended up catching 2 salmon between the 6 of us on the boat. It was trolling fishing, so it was really whoever was lucky enough to get the strike, and the skill was with the guide to put us in the right spot. The only trouble was that the fish weren’t around, so it ended up being a disappointing trip and I caught no fish.

I guess that is why they call it “fishing” and not “catching”. I still had a fun trip with my buddies, and enjoyed the boat rides and scenery, even though we didn’t catch many fish. Here are a few pictures:

I have not felt it was worth giving it another shot, but perhaps one day in the future, I will head back to Astoria, Oregon and give salmon fishing another shot.
