Fire at the Wolf Lake, Indiana, Bar and Grill
Several area fire departments responded at around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to a fire at the Wolf Lake Bar and Grill, along US 33 in Wolf Lake. One firefighter reportedly received minor injuries in a fall; the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Units of the Albion, Churubusco (Smith Township), Cromwell (Sparta Township), Noble Township, and Thorn Creek Fire Departments responded (let me know if I missed anyone).Other units came in to provide standby, including a Kendallville Fire crew that stood by at the Albion fire station. US 33 was shut down for some time, and some firefighters were still on scene after more than four hours.

The rest of the photos were taken by me when my partner and I did a walk around of the building late in the fire, as part of our position as the RIT (Rapid Intervention Team). Our job, basically, was to keep an eye on things and react if any of the firefighters inside or on the roof got into trouble.

The fire doesn't seem to have been too bad, but its still a mess inside, I guess.
And still a bit of snow around...
Here its gone now. We had a rather hefty storm a few days ago, that caused a lot of damage. Since, its gone warmer to about 10C now.
Thats ok for me - anything above +10C is not real winter.
Btw, whats that thing on the road in the last picture - a portable water basin or something like that?
It was a very bad fire, they just knocked it down quickly so it doesn't look so bad from the outside. The kitchen was completely gutted, and there was extensive heat and smoke damage in the rest of the building. That construction is pretty typical of older business blocks in Indiana; I'd guess it dates back around a hundred years or so. Usually they'd be connected to similar buildings, filling up a block.
That is a portable water basin, and the guys there were in the process of draining it to get it back on the truck. It's called a dump tank, and usually holds one or two thousand gallons of water. The tankers can drop them off, fill them, then go back for more water while the engines draft water out of the dump tanks. It ensures a more steady water supply at rural fires--Wolf Lake is a very small community, and doesn't have a water system of its own.
Oops... So sad to hear, I hope everyone was fine there. Fire is really dangerous.

Only one minor injury, from a firefighter slipping on ice. Could have been worse!
Tragic. That building looks like it's been around a long time. Hopefully it can be rehabbed. That's one of the good things about brick. Thanks for the pics.
hope so--depends on whether the insurance company decides it's worth the cost of repairs, but fingers crossed. It still looked structurally secure to me.
