E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (film): a big part of any 80's kid's childhood.

I know I just wrote about the E.T. Merchandise but this movie was so huge in the 80's that it deserves its own article.

This sort of advertising was considered very covert back in the day. You couldn't simply jump on Youtube to see what the heck it was all about. Maybe you would call a friend but mostly it made you look forward to the commercials. At the start of the actual film it is unclear whether or not this is going to be some sort of alien invasion film because it is presented in a very dark manor. According to some sources the original screenplay WAS a horror film where the aliens could kill people with a touch of their long fingers and their intentions for Earth or not good - however one of the fellas (presumably E.T.) befriends and autistic child. Spielberg didn't like the script and asked the writer to re-do it and we got E.T.

The movie starts out a bit spooky, but through the magic of food offerings (reeses pieces) E.T. learns to trust Elliot and his brother and sister. Gertie (played by Drew Barrymore) is just as cute as can be in this movie and although it was not her first film, it may as well have been because this one truly launched her into the limelight.

The film has plenty of action, great animatronics, for the most part great acting, and fantastic direction. Most of the special effects (and there actually were not many of them) are ok but under the microscope would be clunky by today's standards. However, they are forgivable seeing as how this was more than 30 years ago and some people's phone still had rotary dials on them and weighed 20 pounds.

one of the most famous scenes in the history of films

I would be surprised if there are many people who haven't seen this movie and if you haven't I would imagine you have at least heard of it. Space films were all the rage back then but I don't think many people approached the fact that aliens just might be friendly.

This trailer actually makes me a little bit angry because I don't like it when they go back to iconic films and supplement it with modern CGI, it looks out of place and makes fans of the original upset (remember how well-received the "remastered ep 4,5,6 Star Wars were?) If you do watch this I strongly encourage you to watch the original, not the 20 year anniversary one. I might be over-rating this movie based on the fact that I was just the right age to fully appreciate it and it had a wonderful impact on my childhood. However, it is my blog and I'll do what i want with it :P

That takes me back
I was in my 20s then, and still loved it
No doubt it was the idea of the kids outwitting the spoil sport adults - in the form of the Feds trying to protect the planet - that appealed to the youngsters
Do you remember the media stories of the old woman who had a croaky voice from her smoking habit, who said E.T'S famous line in the film?
Nostalgia all the way there, thanks for sharing

i did NOT know that about ET's voice. haha, that's wonderful trivia right there :)

"remember how well-received the "remastered ep 4,5,6 Star Wars were?"

I completely agree!
CGI and classic movies su...

I have seen this movie. The author has highest authority for the success of this movie. And do not forget the children who have played their role very well. $400,000 is enough for orphaned children to adopt.

The film is mostly played in the role of brother @gooddream
