Insomniac Movie Marathon: The Mummy (2017)

I guess the first clue should have been that this is from Alex Kurtzman, writer of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Star Trek Into Darkness and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The second clue was the Dark Universe logo that appeared at the very beginning of the film, announcing the beginning of Universal Studios' extended universe involving the movie monsters made famous in the 1930s. Everyone is obsessed with making these shared universe things. Ugh. Clue number three was, of course, Russell Crowe showing up as Dr. Jekyl, of Jekyl & Hyde fame and head of a super secret organization, Universal's answer to Marvel's Nick Fury I guess.
This is not a good movie.
It had some positives, I suppose. It looked good, mostly. I liked that they made the Mummy of the title a woman, it's an original change from previous incarnations. I usually enjoy Tom Cruise.
What was it about, you ask? That's harder to say. An ancient Egyptian princess makes a deal with the god of the dead, does evil, gets caught, buried alive, wakes up thousands of years later, and stuff happens in the present day. There's a weird interlude where Cruise's character, Nick, fights Mr. Hyde which was weird.
It was entertaining enough I guess but it isn't a good movie.
