Rope (1948) - Lets talk film / A forgotten masterpiece
Two college students who think they are intellectually higher than other normal humans try to come up with a perfect plan for murder. They do it as a way to prove themselves that they both are superior than other humans. They choose their former classmate for this and they kill him by strangling him with a rope. They hide the body inside a chest and use that chest to serve buffet dinner for a party that they will be throwing in a while. "Rope" is one of those movies that will make your eyes glued to the screen throughout.
The movie is inspired after a true story. Leopold and Loeb's murder case is the inspiration behind it. When I read the real story it really freaked me out. This is one of the craziest murders out there. If you want to read the true story, click here.
Alfred Hitchcock is seen to be reinventing his style in this film. He tried to use a lot of long takes through out the film. He wanted hide cuts between each shots to make it look like a one single shot. But, the problem is the cuts were very evident and a it could be seen. For this reason Hitchcock disowned this film after directing it. Either way this film is one of the best in its genre.
Hitchcock did a lot of experiments in this film. The use of minimalism in the sets is one of the important ones. During the 40's Hitchcock did a few films that required minimal amount of sets, but still managing to keep the story powerful. A good artists trait is his ability to redefine his skills after every few years. This requires a lot of experiments. Some of the experiments fail, but some become legends. Hitchcock is known for breaking the norms and being rebellious when it comes to making movies.
James Stuart plays the character of a book publisher in this film and his character is really amazing. He understands and reads about being superior beings, but his perspective on it in real life is unknown. The college students will be having their fun by doing this experiment, but James character will soon start to smell something wrong.
