Rashomon - Lets talk film / the lie called the truth

A samurai has been murdered and there are four witnesses each one has their own version of how the murder took place. But, who is telling the truth? This is the basic premise of Akira Kurosawa's ground breaking film "Rashomon". The movie is very simple and mind-blowing. This film shot Akira Kurosawa to fame and made him a legendary filmmaker.

The movie starts off with a shot of two men sitting in a rainy day below a torn shelter. One of them will be a priest and the other one will be a woodcutter. Both of them will be sitting with a sad and gloomy face. A passer by runs towards them seeking shelter from rain. The passer by looks at both of them and asks why they were both sitting like that and not talking. Then the woodcutter starts remembering what he saw.

The movie is genius at many different levels. This movie is like an anthology, but its an anthology of memories. The story takes place in four different chapters. The four chapters are the four perspectives of the event. That is the murder that took place inside the forest.

The four people who will be witnesses are the wife of samurai, a bandit, the woodcutter and finally the dead samurai himself. You must be wondering how can a dead samurai be a witness, right? Well, I'm not going to answer the question. You should watch the film to get the answer yourself.

The movie shows the inception of Akira Kurosawa's style that made him legendary. The use of rain and the camera angles that tells us what is inside the characters head is really something you must experience.

I highly recommend this film to everyone. This movie has inspired many directors.
