The Big Short (Film): Review.

in #film5 years ago

I think at a time like this, with the cryptocurrencies on the floor, it would be nice to take a look again at the movie The Big Short, which could perhaps make us see from another perspective how the financial world works and thus obtained several conclusions on what may or may not be happening with cryptocurrencies.

Plot

The film shows the history of four groups of characters that, before the 2008 crisis occurred, saw the possibility of making a lot of money when it happened, so they decided to bet against the banking and financial system, some won, others did not, but this is their story.

Opinion

It is a film based on real events, which shows the story of Michael Burry, a hedge fund manager, who studied thousands of mortgage bond loans before the crisis begins, thus foreseeing that the whole mortgage financial process would cause a economic crisis, so he decided to create a financial mechanism to make money when that happened. Along the way, some other individuals related in one way or another to the world of finance and Wall Street are also aware of the problem, so they decide to check if their conclusions are true, and then start betting against the bank.

Anyone could think that a film with such density in its dialogues and that it mentions many technical concepts can become boring and heavy, but it is the opposite, the rhythm of the film does not go down at any time, the dialogues are interesting, ingenious and fun, and the actors convey enough charisma to understand what is happening. And although it is true that the film tackles the problem from a somewhat comical perspective, at least most of the time it is like that, however, it does not do so to laugh at the problem, it does not seek to offend the people who suffered the crisis.

None of the characters in the film is really remarkable, at least to the point of becoming someone that the audience admires or with which they can empathize and put themselves on their side, and this is because in the film there are no heroes, but that all are people quite seduced by money, and that's why they start betting against the system. However, all this does not mean that you can not see good performances in the film, which is not the case, because Bale's acting is really brilliant, he did not need a lot of dialogue to make a good performance, he makes a great use of body language. For his part, Brad Pitt, in a much more passive character, has a great moment in the film, and others like Gosling, Carrel, Wittrock and Magaro are quite convincing in their performances. That's without mentioning the cameos that break the fourth wall to explain to the viewer what the hell is going on.

As I said, The Big Short is a movie where the heroes are villains, where the people who anticipated the crisis are related to each other to begin to take advantage of the situation, a situation that will leave many homeless and others totally bankrupt. And although films about finance and economics are always somewhat complex to understand, the final message of the film is clear, everything can happen again.

Score

6/10

Despite all the efforts of the director to make the complexity of the financial world understandable, the film has so much information and shows it at such a high speed that it is impossible to digest everything that really wants to tell us, however, what is really important is explained very precisely, that's why I recommend it.

Good article and the film - I think again...

This is my all time favorite finance related movie. I just watched it because of Michael Lewis and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moneyball which was a similar movie although less awesome and less dense than The Big Short (2015) I absolutely LOVED this movie.

But it does leave out a lot and make it seem like the main characters were the only ones who were making bank. Multiple analysts of Casey Research and Porter Stansberry and some other investment newsletters predicted and made bets on the 2008 crash and even the readers of those publications made a lot of money. https://www.fool.com/investing/general/2009/08/26/7-investors-who-profited-from-the-crash.aspx

Moneyball is a great movie too!

And what you say is true, in the film it is treated as if the whole thing was a secret, which was not the case, many people, not only in America, knew that this would happen, only that not everyone decided to make money with that.
