The Unlikely Friendship

The powerful auditor cum financial analyst [Teena] was posted to the marketing department, with a well-suited cream outfit and a nice scent of perfume that shows her presence, but in complete contrast with the marketing team attire headed by Dev. Teena is a good fellow who was known for discipline and professionalism while handling work matters.

Unfortunately, for a well-articulated person of such pedigree, there was a contrast to her personality, Dev, who not only applies a care-free approach in the discharge of his work, but you cannot separate him from being a hard worker and risk-taker. The complex contrast of both professionals is what we will see to turn out to be an unlikely friendship between them

Getting started, Teena was already deep into her professional findings in her newly deployed unit while Dev maintained his steeze and calmness, knowing fully well that the marketing world is a dynamic and ever-evolving space. Teena already had some red flags...

In her usual character, she called the attention of Dev and pointed out some of these discrepancies but Dev was unbothered and unconcerned about these findings. He knew too well that there was no misappropriation from the team but rather the dynamism associated with executing sales transactions.

While Teena tried so hard to explain the professional need to do things correctly when it is financial, Dev was busy arguing out the dynamics associated with the task of sales and marketing.

The next day, Teena still continued her auditing, saw some volume of approvals Dev made, not minding the company's budget. She quickly walked up to Dev, asked why he chose this line of action, which is in violation of the company's spending threshold. Dev was never agitated by Teena's outburst but only smiled back at her, saying, Listen, dear colleague, you don't need to be rigid and frustrated here.

I understand vividly that a financial analyst ofyour kind take into cognisant the numbers expended but never acknowledge the potentials and deals such approvals come with. Such travel approvals are for high-network individuals that further represent new income streams for the company.

Okay, listen, Teena, let me give you an example of such trips made. My team was able to execute over 100 million dollars from a new partnership with an expected 35% profit YoY. The money expended is quite insignificant compared to what was attracted. My team and I aren't wasteful or careless...

The day was far spent, and Dev thought it wise to end it peacefully and on a lighter note; he obliged to drop off Teena since they were heading in the same direction. She smiled and agreed to Dev's request.

The next day, Teena watched Dev as he made a presentation to his teammates. Dev was of a mix of empathy and seriousness. He admonished his teammates on the need to be proactive, risk takers, and collaborative. This presentation changed Teena's perception about Dev.

So, Dev, actually knows what he has been doing. His perspective on the team's travel approval and flexibility is a conscious one, positioned to foster greater and inspiring team members.

Teena smiled, called him, Dev, I think I have a good understanding of your work perspective now. It is a bit clearer to me that all you did was intentional and goal-driven. Dev was impressed by these great thoughts from Teena.

Dev responded to Teena, I have calmly checked your reports and found out that you are indeed a great asset to the company by your meticulous and principled lifestyle. She was happy that Dev could appreciate it at least for the first time.

Just like the previous day, Dev opted to drop her off, but at this time requested a sit-out. Teena obliged. They ordered for their drinks & barbecue fish. They chatted and laughed as they discussed their past misunderstandings. They also had a conversation about their career paths, admiring the different perspectives they both shared.

As weeks passed, both of them got to balance their work limitations in a more proactive manner that profited the company at large. While Teena has inculcated financial discipline and respect for the company's cash constraints, Dev also imparted to her the need to be flexible in marketing approach while striking a balance.

This great synergy metamorphosed into a collaborative path that birthed many projects that took into consideration financial prudence in line with company regulations as well as flexibility to achieve goals. Teena and Dev combo plans have continued to be the best mix for the marketing and auditing departments. Indeed, true friendship can always exist in a cooperative space that is result-oriented.
