The flower child - A short story

Moira sat in the park, in her usual spot on her usual bench, while eating her lunch. It was nearly time to go back to the office, but she wanted to enjoy a few more minutes of the fresh air and the sunlight. She has come here to this specific park for many years. Ever since she started at the company across the road, but this spot has become her favorite spot in the world.

She loved the children playing around her, while their parents watched over them. The hour she spent in the park was the highlight of her day, and she felt so relaxed when she went back to the office.

Work is so overrated, she thought to herself. Sitting behind a desk the whole day, while longing to be outside, has never been her idea of fun, but there were bills to be paid. The rat race was on, although she never cared about material things. Her apartment could speak of that. She hasn't bought new furniture ever since she moved in there five years ago, and she still slept on the bed she had as a child.

Her father used to call her his flower child, but sadly both her parents died in a car accident, just over eleven years ago. She loved them dearly, and she was heartbroken when they left her alone in this broken world. They provided enough money for her to go and study directly after school, and five years ago after she obtained her degree, sold the house and moved to the city.

Their whole family used to come to the city often, and some of her happiest childhood moments were spent right here in this park, when her mother brought her along on her weekend trips.

Moira took an extra five minutes to soak in the sun, and then reluctantly took her brown paper bag, took a last look across the park and turned around to walk back to the office.

Moira was just about to cross the street when she saw a ball rolling past her into the street, and a little boy with a blue shirt came rushing past straight into the road. She didn't think, but she was in the road within seconds and grabbed the little boy to prevent him being hit by the oncoming traffic. She grabbed his arm and pulled him back and within one movement he landed on the sidewalk.

Moira was not so lucky. She lost her balance and a white car hit her on her side,  just as she grabbed the little boy on his collar...

She landed on the side of the road.

Nice story with a tragic end. Waiting for the next part to complete it. Thanks for sharing.

Ohh nooo... I hope that Moira will be fine.
And thanks God that the boy was saved.

Oh no! I hope there is a better ending to this so that what she did will not be in vain. It's really sad and tragic one if it did not.

She's a true heroine! Hopefully the "to be continued" means she's still alive. Waiting for the next!

Oh dear! I hope nothing happens to her
