CPC and Child Abuse in Nigeria

in #familyprotection6 years ago

According to Wikipedia

Child Protective Services (CPS) is the name of a governmental agency in many states of the United States responsible for providing child protection, which includes responding to reports of child abuse or neglect. Some states use other names, often attempting to reflect more family-centered (as opposed to child-centered) practices, such as "Department of Children & Family Services" (DCFS). CPS is also known by the name of "Department of Social Services" (DSS) or simply "Social Services.

The rate of family violence and divorce has drastically increase here in Nigeria. For no tangible reason parents want to be apart, maybe they were never meant to be together. When the issues in the home get to a point of divorce, both parties don't want the child to be in the custody of the other. They can do anything to ensure the child is disconnected from the other party.

In Nigeria the body responsible for child protection is UNICEF, this body work with the government to bring child welfare to norm. But most times it doesn't work as it is spelt. UNICEF don't get to handle this kids themselves, they give out this kids to remand home own by Nigerian and some with the interest to exploit. This kids sometimes are sold or given out in other to raise money. The kids are thereby subjected to low level of leaving. Most time they never get reunited with parents as some of these kids are made to believe that their parents are decease. Sometimes these kids are subjected to several assault such as child molestation and sexual abuse.

Divorce may be needed in some cases in marriages but child welfare should be considered. In the course of fighting for child custody, one must weigh the options and know the best option for the kids. CPS/UNICEF is never the best option. When divorce takes place, they are quick to conclude that since parents could not manage their differences and keep the marriage, there is a high tendency that they may not be able to handle the child, this leads to child being taken from parents and send to these so called remand rooms.

Dialog is the best way to resolve dispute, couple should come together and reason between them the best state the child can live in. The mental stability of this child must be fully considered. Children needs to grow in an environment that support their mental stability.
Lets fight against CPS and abuse of children in our society.

You're spot on with everything you said @gtan, this is something that seriously needs to be looked into in Nigeria.
