Well as some of you may know I'm Turkish and everytime I say I'm Turkish it is not really hard to find someone saying "Yumm" but why this animal is named turkey in English.

What is the Reason ?

Before the discover of the America the African Chicken traded to europe through Turkish trade routes and people met with this animal with the Ottoman traders. After the discovery of America when Europeans move to the America they saw the Turkey and they thought it is very similar to the one they saw in their country because of this resemblance they started to call it Turkey.

However the weird thing is only english language uses our countries name for this animal. The name for this animal is quite different in other languages , when we take a look to the major languages we see word hint in india , in french we see coq d and in german it is indianische henn and in turkish we call it hindi. As you can see in every language there is an india root for this animal. The reason for this is quite hilarious as you all know when kristoff colomb discovered america he thought that place was india ,therefore the animal discovered in there got the indian roots. In 16. century spanish traders bought Turkey from Turkish traders and sold it to England therefore it I highly assume that the name stayed that way.
